Location:

The cemetery is located 10 kilometres south of Kassel and 2 kilometres from the main road from Kassel to Marburg. Approach Kassel on the A49 motorway leaving at junction Kassel Niederzwehren, which forms the Frankfurter Strasse. The first right hand turning leads into the Dittershauser Strasse. Continue on this road which becomes a narrow road at the bend. Follow the bend to the right, where the cemetery is clearly signposted, which leads to a small crossroads. Turn left at the crossroads where Niederzwehren Cemetery becomes visible from the roadside. The Commonwealth plots now form a separate cemetery lying beside the Russian cemetery.

  • Newspaper Clipping– This item appeared in the December 28, 1916 issue of the East Elgin Tribune newspaper (Aylmer, Ontario).  (It was scanned from an original copy of the newspaper in the collection of the Aylmer & District Museum.)  In 1917, Benson volunteered for the Royal Flying Corps.  He was lost on a raid against Offenburg, Germany, on June 25, 1918, while flying as the observer in a DH9 bomber aircraft of 99 Squadron, Royal Air Force.
  • Memorial– Aylmer Cenotaph, Talbot Street West, Aylmer, Ontario, on which 2nd Lieutenant Benson is commemorated.  (Image taken by Gregory J. Barker of Barrie, Ont. in 2011.  It may be copied and used without further permission.)
  • Inscription– Detail of the Aylmer Cenotaph, Talbot Street West, Aylmer, Ontario, showing Benson`s name.
  • Letter– This information from the CWGC indicates that the remains of Second Lieutenant Benson were first buried at Lahr, Germany and then moved in 1924 to the Niederzwehren Cemetery, outside Kassel, Germany.
