Built October 20, 1920 by soldiers from the small mining town of Beverly, Alberta (now an Edmonton neighbourhood) who had returned from the First World War. Before the Royal Canadian Legion was formed the returning soldiers created the Beverly Veterans Institute.

The Beverly Memorial Cenotaph, at the corner of 118th Avenue and 40th Street, is considered to be Alberta’s oldest modern war monument. Unveiled Oct. 17, 1920, less than two years after the end of the Great War, the monument honoured the 170 people from Beverly, then a coal-mining town of just 1,000 people, who had served in the war. The names of the 28 Beverly soldiers who died in the war are still etched into the granite pillar. Each year since, the park and Cenotaph has given a place for reflection for our military and community, as well as education for today’s youth from the local schools.  This Monument and park area was granted “historical status” with the City of Edmonton.

The Beverly Memorial Cenotaph Committee fundraised, and submitted grant applications with the help of Beverly Towne Community Development Society to revitalize the park and Cenotaph. Both organizations worked with the City of Edmonton to redesign an open park area and raise and update the plaques on the base of the Cenotaph commemorating Canada’s military engagements. New sidewalks, and park and Cenotaph lighting make the area safer for the public. It is important to express that without the generous donation of the Rotary Club of Edmonton Northeast for their Legacy Project, our Cenotaph would not be completed.

Many of the cenotaphs built in commonwealth countries resemble "The Cenotaph" in Whitehall, London. Designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens, it was as a memorial specifically for those who died in World War I. The Calgary Cenotaph and accompanying benches, were added in 1928, at the west end of the Memorial park. The Calgary Cenotaph (1928) recalls the original ideas of the original "The Cenotaph" in Whitehall, London, but differs slightly.  Dedicated to the soldiers who died in both World Wars. As it was built prior to World War II, the front and back were amended with "and 1939 - 1945", and a longer sword blade,  to include those that died in the second world war. The wreaths are draped around the Cenotaph, instead of the circular wreaths which were hung on the front and back of the original. The main difference though is the addition of the crown and sword which may be in reference to the Alberta troops also known as "Lord Strathcona's Horse (Royal Canadians)". The shape of a cenotaph is based on three circles or arcs. The base is only partially above ground, and (symbolically) goes deep into the earth. While the sides of the column create two arcs that meet up high in the sky.

This memorial is dedicated
to those men and women from the
Rural Municipality of Montcalm
who answered the call to serve
their country in times of war and peace.

We honour those who gave so much
for the cause of peace and freedom.

They were young, as we are young.
They served, giving freely of themselves.
To them, we pledge, amid the winds of time,
to carry their torch and never forget.
We will remember them.

[back/arrière]

Au champ d'honneur, les coquelicots
Sont parsemés de lot en lot
Auprès des croix; et dans l'espace
Les alouettes devenues lasses
Mêlent leurs chants au sifflement
Des obusiers.

Nous sommes morts,
Nous qui songions la veille encor'
À nos parents, à nos amis,
C'est nous qui reposons ici,
Au champ d'honneur.

À vous jeunes désabusés,
À vous de porter l'oriflamme
Et de garder au fond de l'âme
Le goût de vivre en liberté.
Acceptez le défi, sinon
Les coquelicots se faneront
Au champ d'honneur.

John McCrae
(Adaptation par Jean Pariseau)

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch, be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

John McCrae

The Pillars of Remembrance was erected by the Rural Municipality of Montcalm a few weeks before Remembrance Day, 2020. The two "wings" were constructed of imported jet black granite and the base is light grey granite. It features doves flying above a field of white poppies with one red poppy. The red poppy symbolizes the specific individual being remembered by whoever is at the monument.

The project began with local Resident Mona Lavalee who basically led it by herself. Montcalm was without a war memorial and it was decided to call it a peace memorial to commemorate past and future Veterans. Funding came through grants, donations from local organizations, and the Veteran's Association. Over $22,000 came from Veterans Affairs Canada, the R.M. of Montcalm, and the Morris Legion Poppy Fund. The Province of Manitoba  added another $10,000 through its Military Conservation Grant.

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the official unveiling and dedication was delayed until the spring of 2021.

A monument to honour Civil Air Search and Rescue Association volunteers and Military aircrew who lost their lives since the formation of CASARA in 1986, was unveiled in May 1997, at Heritage Park, Winnipeg, Manitoba during the “Manitoba Flood of the Century”. The site is located across the road from the military air force building known as 1 Canadian Air Division Headquarters (Air Com). A bronze plaque on the monument lists the names of the CASARA spotters and military aircrew who lost their lives in June 1986 during the crash of a military SAR Twin Otter while on search in the Kananaskis Valley area. It also lists the names of those killed in a CASARA aircraft that crashed while on search 10 years later in July 1996. The guest of honour for the unveiling was the Honourable Yvonne Dumont, then Lieutenant Governor of Manitoba.

The Naval Monument was erected in 1996 by the Royal Canadian Naval Association, Admiral Hose Branch Windsor and dedicated during the Battle of the Atlantic service on May 4, 1997.

In 2010, to mark the 100th anniversary of the Royal Canadian Navy, bronze plaques were added to the monument to commemorate 100 years of naval service by Canadians and to honour Rear-Admiral Walter Hose the savior of the Royal Canadian Navy and the father of the Royal Canadian Navy Reserve. Rear-Admiral Hose was a longtime resident of Windsor and is buried there in Heavenly Rest Cemetery.

During 2016 to 2018, the monument underwent a complete restoration which included the addition of two bronze plaques to honour the Royal Canadian Navy ships lost during the Battle of the Atlantic and was updated to honour those who served during the Cold War and in Afghanistan. Five new flag poles were added to display the evolution of the Canadian Naval “Suite of Colours” on His Majesty’s Canadian Ships (warships) – the Blue Ensign 1911 – 1965; the White Ensign 1911 – 1965; the Canadian Maple Leaf 1965 – Present; the Canadian Naval Ensign 1968 – Present and the Red Ensign of the Merchant Navy of Canada. The surrounding plaza was significantly expanded by the City of Windsor during the reconstruction of the adjacent river-walk to include new planters and landscaping. The monument was rededicated on May 6, 2018.

In 2019, the Royal Canadian Naval Association with support from the City of Windsor, Windsor Port Authority, Royal Canadian Legion Branches, Navy League Windsor Branch, Veterans Organizations and the citizens of Windsor and Essex County initiated a project to commemorate the contributions and sacrifices made by those who served in the Royal Canadian Navy and the Merchant Navy with the addition of four black granite Memory Panels.

Construction of the concrete footings for the granite panels, surrounding concrete plaza and landscaping was completed on October 30, 2020. Installation of the engraved black granite memory panels was completed in May 2021.

The Naval Monument Plaza was dedicated on May 7, 2023, Battle of the Atlantic Sunday to coincide with the Navy Reserve 100th Anniversary.
