Many projects were considered by the Knights of Columbus of Ontario to commemorate Canada's Centennial and all agreed with past State Deputy Tobias Kelly’s suggestion of a monument dedicated to peace on earth. Erected in 1967 by the Knights of Columbus of Ontario, the Pray for Peace consists of three modernistic columns representing three persons of the Trinity as they look down on a portion of a globe representing a troubled, war-torn world.

William C. "Bill" Kennedy, Grand Knight of Toronto Council #1388 volunteered to be the Chairman for the project. Regrettably, Bill died before the project was completed and in his stead, Cecil Berry of Council #1388 in Toronto chaired the project. He died soon after the project was completed.

Pray for Peace was unveiled on October 22, 1967, by past State Deputy Louis Salini and dedicated by Most Rev. Wiliam J. Smith Bishop of Pembroke State Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus. The 25 feet high monument weighs 50 tons and was made in 13 sections of Barre granite. It was designed by Donald Ailles of Toronto and produced by the Smith Monument Company of Toronto. Statues of a father, mother and child face the columns and represent a family reading the inscription on the base of the columns.

The cost of the $40,000 monument was covered by 30,000 Knights of Columbus members in Ontario subscribing $1.30 each. The land, lighting and maintenance were provided by the city.

The Queen's Own Rifles of Canada Memorial and Book of Remembrance were both erected by The Queen's Own Rifles Association and dedicated on March 13, 1932. The Book of Remembrance includes the names of all members of the regiment who died in the service of their country – in combat, and in peacetime. It is kept in a special case in a memorial shrine at the back of the main chancel (west side) of St. Paul’s Bloor Street – the Regimental Church.

The Book of Remembrance is taken out at each service at which the regiment is present, by a special party of senior officers and non-commissioned officers, and escorted to the front. It is presented to the Commanding Officer, who in turn presents it to the Rector who places it on the High Table (Altar) during the service. The process is reversed at the end of the service to return it to its place of honour.

There are two Books in two locations. The book with the plain green cover that is chained to its own stone plinth to the left of the memorial is available for anyone to look through. The Book of Remembrance is locked in the glass and brass case on the memorial.

The Afghanistan Repatriation Memorial was paid for by donations through the Give to Honour Those Who Gave campaign and unveiled on November 10, 2012. It features two large granite maple leaves. The red maple leaf is inscribed with the Canadian Forces emblem and provincial shields. The black maple leaf is inscribed with the names of the 158 soldiers who have died in Afghanistan. A granite silhouette of a soldier stands in front. The maple leaves are flanked by two Canadian flags and two granite benches.

It was created by Campbell Monument Company and the granite pieces were made from Indian Red and Jet Black which were quarried and shaped in India.

The memorial is close to 8 Wing/CFB Trenton where repatriation ceremonies were held for those who died on the mission and its location marks the beginning of the Highway of Heroes – the path that extends from Quinte West to Toronto.

Memorial to Honour Canadian Heroes of the
War in Afghanistan

Dedicated this 11th day of November in the year 2020

From October 2001 to March 2014, over 40,000 men and women of the Canadian Armed Forces served in Afghanistan with
courage and determination. One hundred fifty-eight of them sacrificed their lives in service to their country.

The people of Ontario dedicate this memorial to the Canadian heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice to protect our values
and our freedom. Lest We Forget.

Infrastructure Ontario worked with the Ministry of Heritage, Sport, Tourism and Culture Industries on the construction of the Ontario Afghanistan Memorial to honour those who served in Afghanistan. It is an addition to the existing Ontario Veterans’ Memorial

PFS Studio designed the memorial in consultation with retired General Rick Hillier. The memorial features a zigzagging bronze ribbon to symbolize Afghanistan’s mountainous terrain. It includes a stone from an inukshuk dedicated to the fallen, which was erected by Canadian soldiers at the Kandahar air field.

The Honourable Elizabeth Dowdeswell, Lieutenant Governor and Premier Doug Ford unveiled the memorial on November 11, 2020. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, attendance was limited to a few journalists, officials and military personnel.

THE VICTORIA CROSS, which was instituted by Queen Victoria in
1856, is the Commonwealth's premier military decoration for gallantry.  It
was created to honour "most conspicuous bravery, or some daring or
pre-eminent act of valour or self-sacrifice, or extreme devotion to duty in
the presence of the enemy."

A recommendation for the Victoria Cross was usually issued by an officer
at the regimental level, or equivalent, supported by three witnesses.  It was
subsequently passed up the chain of command to the secretary of state for
defence, and then presented to the reigning monarch to sign.  some awards
were bestowed posthumously.  All citations were published in the London
Gazette.

The bronze cross pattee was originally made from the metal of two
Russian cannons captured at the Siege of Sevastopol (1854-55) during the
Crimean War.  The pattee is decorated with the Royal Crown surmounted
by a lion guardant.  Below it is a scroll with the words "FOR VALOUR."
The recipient's rank, name and regiment were engraved on the reverse of
the mounting bar and a ribbon added.

Canada's recipients total 99, including some who were attached to the
forces of other Commonwealth countries as well as non-Canadians
serving in Canadian units.

[plaque]

The Victoria Cross Memorial was officially dedicated on June 25, 2017. It was designed by Jeff Dennis, architect and Director of Development for Mount Pleasant Group of Cemeteries. An artistic representation of the Maple Leaf on Canada’s flag, the memorial is partitioned into three sections: Boer War and Prior, First World War, and Second World War.

The memorial has ninety-nine plaques, one for each Victoria Cross recipient. Each plaque describes the recipient's most conspicuous bravery or some daring or pre-eminent act of valour, self-sacrifice or extreme devotion to duty in the presence of the enemy.

Between two of St. Michael’s College's residences — More and Fisher houses — is a passageway that connects Queen’s Park Crescent East and the college quad. The memorials for former students and graduates of St. Michael’s College School, as well as the University of St. Michael’s College in the University of Toronto, who died in the two World Wars and the Korean War are inscribed along the wall.

There are 12 arched sandstone panels:

Panel 1 - St. Michael’s College crest with Motto in Greek.

Panel 2 - Greek lyric fragment by Simonides about those who died in the battle of Thermopylae.

Panel 3 - English translation of panel 2.

Panels 4 and 5 - Names from the First World War in alphabetical order; a cross at the top of each arch.

Panels 6 to 11 - Names from the Second World War in alphabetical order; a cross at the top of each arch.

Panel 12 – One name from the Korean War; a cross at the top of the arch.

Many American students attended St. Michael’s College and some of those shown on the memorial served in the American Forces.

This memorial was an expansion to the existing cenotaph and was dedicated to all Veterans on September 18, 2021. The expansion included two granite memorial walls where the names of deceased Veterans from Branch 564 were inscribed. The memorial walls are updated annually.

The project was the vision of Cde. Eddie Thompson, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 564 1st Vice-President, who felt Veterans deserved better. Eddie costed out the project, formed a cenotaph committee, and hit the ground running securing a government grant of $25,000.00 from Veterans Affairs Canada under the Commemorative Partnership Program. He reached out to numerous community partners, such as good friend Dario Zulich, to support the project with donations of cash, goods and/or services. Eddie ran a successful fundraising campaign exceeding his target of paver stone sales to help offset the overall cost of the project.

Despite health challenges, Eddie forged ahead with perseverance and resilience never giving up on his Legion, the Veterans, or this project. In the true spirit of comradeship, the Branch 564 Executive, their membership, and community partners came together to assist Eddie in bringing the project to fruition.

The memorial was made accessible to Veterans with mobility issues by incorporating paver stone walkways and platforms. The memorial is not only symbolic in fostering Remembrance but serves as a gathering place for Veterans, service personnel, Legionnaires, civic leaders, the community, and local cadet corps to participate in acts of Remembrance throughout the year. Youth can also take inspiration in carrying the torch of Remembrance.
