At about the time of the unveiling of the uncut stone memorial (Sault Ste. Marie Memorial Stone) that was erected by the New Ontario soldiers at the corners of Gore and Wellington Streets, a Citizens War Memorial committee under the chairmanship of Dr. Nelson met on July 6, 1923, in the Great War Veterans Association clubrooms, to discuss the matter of raising funds for a memorial monument.

The fundraising was successful, and a design for a sculpture was accepted from Alfred Howell of Toronto. The theme of it was: "Triumph of Right over the God of War". The cornerstone, holding a prayer and tokens of the dead, was laid by Franics H. Clergue in August 1923, and it was dedicated by Canon Scott. J.W. Curran, the founder and editor of The Sault Star, wrote to the renowned Rudyard Kipling and asked him to write a poem to be used as an inscription on the monument. He granted this almost unheard-of request.

The monument which is 22 feet high, was cast in Toronto, and was erected during the summer of 1924, by J.J. Fitzpatrick. Lord Byng, the Governor General of Canada, accompanied by Lady Byng, unveiled the memorial on September 2, 1924. The original cast metal sword which was fastened onto the base of the monument was stolen. A new one was fabricated by employees of Algoma Steel and replaced. It too, was stolen. At a later date, while the monument was being refurbished, the outline of a sword was chiselled into the stone.

The crouching figure under a shield represents the God of War. The draped figure holding a sword in the right hand and left hand holding maple leaf leaves represents the Triumph of Right. Side panels depict men reluctantly answering the call to arms and soldiers helping the wounded.

Through the years, the memorial and surrounding grounds deteriorated and in the spring of 1990, the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 25 formed a committee to oversee the restoration of the memorial. The Cenotaph Restoration Trust Fund Board of Trustees: Murray Davis, Chairman; Tom McQuaid, Treasurer; Bill Misener, Secretary; Tom Angus, Dale Anderson, Ed Dinsdal, Perry Short, Ray Cartmill and Bob Miller were the trustees. Marg Vanderburg, Ellen Butler and the women of the Legion worked on the fundraising efforts by completing the mailings to individuals, service clubs, companies, unions, fraternal organizations, ethnic groups, etc. Kathy Smith, the landscape architect was responsible for the materials chosen and oversaw the construction while Ray Cartmill offered his expertise with granite.

The construction was completed by Norval Construction. A rededication of the memorial was held September 13, 1992 after a successful fundraising campaign was organized by the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 25. The Legion Band played “O Canada” and “God Save the Queen” while Constable Lyndon Slewidge sang. Comrade George P. Patterson, First Vice-President and Ceremonial Chairman, The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 25; Gordon Kelly, President, The Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 25; Comrade Murray Davis, Chairman, Sault Ste. Marie Cenotaph Restoration Trust Fund; Gil Cymblis; Reverend Don White; Father Burns; Joe Fratesi, Mayor of The City of Sault Ste. Marie; Comrade Sam McGhee, District H. Commander, Royal Canadian Legion; and Robin Barcis all addressed the audience. Jay Dinsdale performed Last Post and Reveille.

In the first four months of the First World War 1,500 men, nearly one tenth of the population of Sault Ste. Marie, enlisted. Three hundred and fifty died fighting.

The first operational Bailey Bridge was built by 237th Field Company, Royal Engineers, over the Medjerda River near Majaz Al Bab in Tunisia on the night of 26 November 1942. The very first instance of a Bailey Bridge being erected under fire was at Leonforte by members of the 3rd Field Company, Royal Canadian Engineers.

427 Squadron was initially formed in 1942 as a bomber squadron during the Second World War. The squadron was adopted by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, MGM, who presented a bronze lion to the squadron. This, along with the adoption of one of Prime Minister Churchill’s lion cubs, Mareth, is how the squadron became affectionately known as the Lion Squadron.

Following the war in 1952, 427 squadron was re-activated as a fighter squadron flying first the CF-86 Sabre and then the CF-104 Starfighter in 1962. In 1971, the 427 Lion Squadron was rerolled to tactical aviation flying in support of the army with a variety of aircraft including the L-19 Bird Dog, CH-136, Kiowa, CH-135 Twin Huey, and currently the CH-146 Griffon.

427 Special Operations Aviation Squadron is now the dedicated Special Operations Forces aviation assets for the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command.

In leading up to the squadron's 75th anniversary, a project was undertaken to honour all those who had perished while serving with 427 Squadron since its inception. The 427 Squadron Memorial Cenotaph was unveiled in Veterans' Memorial Park on October 15, 2017. Four black granite ‘wings’ are slotted into a center, main granite pillar. On each wing are etchings of the different aircraft used by the squadron over the years, followed by a listing of those who died in service on those aircraft. Information included for service members: air force they served with, rank at time of death, name, date of passing, and location of mission associated with passing. The memorial is topped with a black granite cap and a sculpted bronze lion.

The Cobden Veterans Memorial is also located here.

This memorial was unveiled in memory of the members of 2 Combat Engineer Regiment (2 CER) who died while serving in the Former Yugoslavia.

Christopher Gregory Holopina was born in October 1973 in Russell, Manitoba. In March 1995, he joined the military and upon completion of his sapper training, was posted to 2 CER. In December 1995, he deployed to Bosnia-Herzegovina. On 4 July 1996, Sapper Holopina's section was called out to help rescue a group of British soldiers who were stranded in a minefield. While travelling to the task site, the armoured vehicle he was riding in, rolled over into a ravine while trying to avoid an accident near Ripac. Sapper Holopina died as a result of this accident and is buried at the Shell Valley (St. John’s) Cemetery in Russell.

Gilles Joseph Stephan Desmarais was born in Sudbury in June 1975. Gilles joined the militia as an infantryman in 1993 before transferring to the Regular Force in April 1995 as a sapper. Following completion of his trades training, he was posted to  2 CER and deployed to Bosnia. This was followed by a second tour to Bosnia in 1998. Sapper Desmarais was killed on 25 September 1998, while working on a construction project at the Canadian camp at Zgon, Bosnia-Herzegovina. He is buried at the Noelville Cemetery, near Sudbury.
