This granite monument is the main memorial located at Beechwood Cemetery. Beechwood is the site of the National Military Cemetery, established through a partnership between Commonwealth War Graves Commission Canadian Agency, Veterans Affairs Canada, Department of National Defence, and Beechwood.

Established in 1873, Beechwood was designed as a 19th century rural cemetery following the prohibition of burials within town limits. The western part of Section 29 was established as a military cemetery by the Soldiers’ Aid Commission and Department of Militia and Defence in 1918, and the majority of First World War dead are buried here, including several who were moved from single lots throughout the cemetery in 1922. Section 29 continued to be used for First World War veterans and later for war dead and veterans of the Second World War. War dead from the Second World War were also buried in Section 27 after it was purchased by Veterans Affairs Canada in 1944.

Following the Second World War, Beechwood continued to be used for burial of Canadian military personnel, including veterans and war dead who served in Korea, Bosnia, and Afghanistan.

In 1957-58, a Cross of Sacrifice and shelter building with a Cremation Memorial were erected in Section 27 and a dedication ceremony was held on 10 May 1959.

When Beechwood Cemetery was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 2000, Section 27 was recognized as a key feature of the cemetery’s heritage value due to its prominent and central location in the cemetery and the uniform headstones surrounding the Cross of Sacrifice.

In 2005, the road separating the Cremation Memorial from the rest of Section 27 was turned into a walkway and signs were installed at the western entrance. A foot path was created to join Sections 29, 27, and 103. Annual horticulture features are planted around the Cross, Cremation Memorial and along grave rows in all four section of the National Military Cemetery.

In 2007, Beechwood established the National Military Cemetery encompassing the military plots in Sections 19 (Last Post Fund plot) and 29 and Sections 27 and 103 (established after 1947).

In 2009, Canadian Parliament passed a bill recognizing Beechwood as the National Cemetery of Canada.

The Peacekeeping Monument was a joint venture between the Department of National Defence and the National Capital Commission. In 1990, the Department of National Defence launched the Peacekeepers Monument competition, managed by a committee consisting of representatives from the Department of National Defence, National Capital Commission, and Public Works Canada. The winning submission was entitled The Reconciliation, though many people know it as the Peacekeeping monument. Reconciliation means that the warring sides have settled their differences peacefully and are ready to get along again.

Members of the winning design team from British Columbia were: Jack Kenneth Harman, sculptor; Richard G. Henriquez, architect and urban designer; and Cornelia H. Oberlander, landscape architect. The team also included Gabriel Design, lighting design, and J.L. Richards and Associates, engineering services, both of Ottawa. V.K. Mason Construction Ltd. built the monument. Their design includes a corridor of concrete and steel debris inside two solid granite walls. The corridor is best viewed from the south-east, where the eye is drawn into the narrow opening by a pattern of floor tiles that was modelled on the Green Line bisecting Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus. The tiles curve around chunks of sawn and drilled concrete littering the corridor floor.

Artist Jack Harman, created a model out of wood and wax representing members of the Canadian Armed Forces. Harman depicted three uniformed figures in alert, active stances to stress that peacekeeping is dangerous. These three figures were later cast in bronze and stand on top of the walls. Two peacekeepers look into the distance, watching what the soldiers on each side are doing. The third peacekeeper crouches beside a Canadian flag, holding a radio to update headquarters with the situation and ensure people are safe.

Broken-up concrete below the walls represent the destruction caused by wars. The walls rise and form a point to symbolize pointing toward the future, when the war is over and there is peace again. Over to one side of the monument are 12 Oak trees in a circle. The number of trees represents the 10 provinces and two territories that comprised Canada when the monument was created in 1992. Oak trees represent the promise of peace; a grove, symbol of life. Adjacent to the trees is a semi-circular ceremonial space.

The Reconciliation was dedicated on 8 October 1992. This special monument commemorates Canada's role in international peacekeeping and the soldiers, both living and dead, who have participated or are currently participating in peacekeeping operations. Since 1947, Canadian peacekeepers have served overseas in a variety of United Nations peacekeeping and peace support missions. Canada played a leading role in the peacekeeping movement from the outset. Canadian Lester B. Pearson won the 1957 Nobel Peace Prize for his pioneering vision in helping establish a United Nations force during the Suez Crisis of the 1950s. Since then, Canada's commitment to international peace efforts and other overseas military actions has continued.

The Royal Canadian Navy Monument commemorates the contributions and sacrifices of the men and women in naval uniform who have served and continue to serve Canada at sea in times of peace and war. Built for the Navy’s Centennial in 2010, it is located at Richmond Landing, a quiet enclave in the heart of Ottawa, surrounded on three sides by water where it juts into the Ottawa River just below the Library and Archives Canada building and not far from the Canadian War Museum.

Rather than a single focal object, the site itself is a key part of the monument. It is a tranquil sloped lawn that provides for a moment of reflective pause while also offering a visceral feeling of flow and movement, like a ship at sea, and contained within the setting of the river and the sky. The monument reflects many facets of the Canadian Navy in its use of the naval colours of black, white and gold.

In addition to the symbolism of the site itself, the monument includes two main components:

  • The Naval Signature: a curved white marble structure that celebrates the navy’s past and future. Its dramatic vertical form suggests many naval associations, from sails to naval attire and even modern stealth ship design. Set into an inclined granite base, it symbolizes the sense of movement inherent in the naval experience. Cut into this inclined granite base are two bronze strips aligned with the North/South and East/West cardinal axes, referencing navigation and Canada’s tri-coastal naval reality. A curved level deck on the east side of the sloped granite plinth provides repose and a comfortable opportunity to read the Naval Battle Honours inscribed in the surface of the marble, as well as a view of the fast-moving Ottawa River. Set into the deck is a fouled anchor, a powerful naval symbol, made of black granite.
  • The Navy Wake: Added to the monument in 2017, this long and low curved wall is inscribed with the names of all Her/His Majesty’s Canadian Ships and naval establishments since the navy’s founding in 1910. Its curvilinear form makes visual reference to many naval shapes including ships, sails, and waves.

And several other elements:

  • Mast: contrasting the solidity of stone Naval Signature, the delicate steel navy mast provides a second spatial counterpoint within the monument space. A recognized symbol on all ships and naval establishments, the mast and its flags link past, present, and future.
  • Gold spheres: mounted on both the Naval Signature and the mast, these orbs speak of sun, moon, and the global reach of the navy, and to the critical dimension of communications and navigation. The slight offset of the gilded orb on the white marble Signature contributes to the unsettled sense of horizontality.
  • Entry threshold / Heart of Oak: a shallow grass berm, surrounded with symbolic oak trees. Oak is a historic shipbuilding material, immortalized in the traditional navy song Heart of Oak.
  • Pier on the Ottawa River: a naval reference that makes the monument site symbolically accessible by water, though the pier could also be used for practical ceremonial purposes, for example to land dignitaries on the site from a vessel.

Al McWilliams, a Canadian artist from Vancouver, British Columbia, worked with the architects Joost Bakker and Bruce Haden to create the design of the monument. "During our initial visit to the Richmond Landing site, the three of us were unanimous in thinking that the site, as a land form, needed very little, but subtle, manipulation. The shape of this peninsula, while much like the prow of a ship, also echoed the shape of Canada, a tri-coastal nation surrounded on three sides by water."

The original memorial (central column) was dedicated to those who lost their lives in World War One. Following the Second World War, a secondary addition was made to the primary column. A pair of carved stone benches flanks the central column, dedicated to the soldiers who died in WWII. A small bronze plaque was also added to the base of the central column dedicated to commemorate the Korea war. A third (major) addition was completed in 2010. Two new curved walls were added on either side of the memorial. A total of 20 new bronze plaques display the names of all veterans who served in WWI and WWII.

The Unknown Soldier, who served with the 19th Lincoln Regiment during the First World War, was originally laid to rest in the Field of Honour in Section M at Fairview Cemetery and his grave identified with a flat marker. Discussions around the installation of an upright or larger memorial as well as the development of an improved Memorial Garden, led to a new location and much larger memorial area with a raised crypt monument to serve as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. On top are a medieval sword and a helmet of the type worn in the First World War. A poppy design is in the paver stones under the crypt. The nearby dedication stone is flanked by Canadian and Union Jack Flags. Two Vimy Oaks (donated by Legion Branch 479) are adjacent to the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.

Mark Richardson, manager of cemetery services for the City of Niagara Falls, spearheaded the more prominent location for the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. The memorial was made and installed by Kirkpatrick Monuments of Niagara Falls.

Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is a monument for all those who gave their lives and services in the name of their country, without recognition or regard to their own safety. On September 16, 2017, a ceremony properly recognized the Unknown Soldier through a formal military funeral and entombment. The Unknown Soldier was brought into the cemetery, from Morse and Son Funeral Home, carried by a horse and carriage, and re-interred in the new tomb. Local representatives from the Canadian Armed Forces served as pallbearers.

Known unto God

[English plaque/plaque anglais]

In Flanders Fields

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The Larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch, be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep though poppies grow
In Flanders fields

-John McCrae

[French plaque/Français plaque]

Au Champ d’Honneur

Au champ d’honneur, les coquelicots
Sont parsemés de lot en lot
Auprès des croix; et dans l’espace
Les alouettes devenues lasses
Mêlent leurs chants au sifflement
Des obusiers.
Nous sommes morts
Nous qui songions la veille encor’
À nos parents, à nos amis,
C’est nous qui reposons ici
Au champ d’honneur.
À vous jeunes désabusés
À vous de porter l’oriflamme
Et de garder au fond de l’âme
Le goût de vivre en liberté.
Acceptez le défi, sinon
Les coquelicots se faneront
Au champ d’honneur.
