This memorial is located at the gates to what was Vimy Barracks (now CFB Kingston) and is dedicated to those in the Royal Canadian Corps of Signals who gave their lives for their country.

In 1962 over $30,000 was raised for construction of a fitting Signals War Memorial. A sod turning ceremony was held in June 1962 and the unveiling parade was held 6 October, 1962. In 2014 the memorial was rededicated to include members of the Communications and Electronics Branch who died as a result of their service.

The National Royal Canadian Horse Artillery Memorial for soldiers who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars is the only memorial in Canada dedicated solely to the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery (RCHA), not to be confused with the Royal Regiment of Artillery Memorial dedicated to all gunners.

The magnificent granite structure includes bronze plaques for locations of Battle Honours. The memorial is flanked by two canons from the 1800s. It also includes a 25-pounder gun with plaques from the Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry and the Royal Canadian Regiment for Gunner support in Afghanistan and Korea. It was erected in 1921 by their comrades of the RCHA who survived the wars and dedicated by General Burstal. In 1951 it was rededicated and updated by FM Lord Alexander.

The Napanee Cenotaph's base is built of genuine Barre Vermont granite, known as the rock of ages, and is engraved with the names of 156 men who died in the First World War. The great sacrifice that they made in giving us victory and peace is represented in sheathed swords supporting the altar and maple leaves. The tribute to the victorious is bronze.

The Union Jack is carved on the four stones surrounding the base, each engraved with battle field names. The lettering of the inscription is driven in deep enough so that their own shadow makes them stand out.

The concrete foundation is five feet in the ground, the exact size of the stone. At extreme points, it measures 24 feet by 24 feet andthe total height from the ground to the top of the altar is 14 feet six inches. The cenotaph is hand finished, grass terraced, surrounded by a simple flower bed and walks leading to the Court House are placed on each side.

This black stone monument is dedicated to the memory of Sergeant Shawn Allen Eades, CD, member of 1 Combat Engineer Regiment, and former student at Westwood Public School, who was killed in action on August 20, 2008 in the Zahri District of Afghanistan.

Excerpt from an article in the Hamilton Spectator, by Stacey Escott, 25 September, 2011:

"Fallen Hamilton soldier Shawn Allen Eades’ wife and two young daughters missed the connecting flight that would get them to his memorial ceremony last week (Friday 23 Sep 11).

The family lives in Edmonton and had to catch a plane from Winnipeg that would fly them to Hamilton. With just half an hour to get in and out of the airport, the plane left without them. Lisa pleaded with airport authorities, and after hearing her story, the pilot turned the plane around and came back for them. The people already on board clapped as Lisa and her daughters Breanna, 10, and Niya, 7, were seated.

They were joined by family and friends, soldiers, teachers, students and politicians as close to 200 people at Westwood Public School remembered the fallen soldier Friday afternoon. Eades was killed on Aug. 20, 2008, while on duty in Afghanistan. He was two weeks away from coming home after his third rotation.

The ceremony took place in the school gymnasium at Westwood where Shawn was a student from grades 3-6 in the ’80s. Students sat patiently as they waited to stand up and sing Canadian Heroes. After the stone was unveiled in the Westwood schoolyard, Breanna and Niya lit the lanterns as the rest of the family laid red roses in front of it."

Prepare to Fire was unveiled on August 3, 2012, during the bicentennial Roots to Boots Festival. It was designed and created by Windsor, Ontario, sculptors Laura and Mark Williams to commemorate the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813.

The monument depicts bronze life-size figures of three British Royal Navy men and one foot soldier recruited to help fight the battle aboard ship in Lake Erie. During this time, man power was becoming harder to recruit and as were supplies to fight the battle, which was the case for the ‘flints’ required to fire their cannons onboard the ships. Depicted in the sculpture is a man with a musket in hand preparing to fire their ship cannon in battle. A Navy commander is holding a megaphone to holler out commands on board and at the same time helping a wounded soldier (recently shot). The winded soldier was positioned to align the canon for firing.

During the process of creating this monument, Mark and Laura worked with reenactors from the Provincial Marine group for staging and artist reference. Mark designed the concept and created the armature in steel and hand sculpted the life size figures in clay. His understudy, Dick Wood, sculpted the Marina, packing the cannon with powder. Mark then oversaw and completed final details. The cannon used was cast at Ford Motor Company many years earlier and was mounted on a faux wood cement deck to represent the frigate in battle.

Once the monument was completed in clay, they brought it to Fine Arts Foundry in Clarkton, Michigan to be molded and then cast in bronze. The first two figures were unveiled in 2012 at the Boots to Roots Festival and then the following year, the two remaining figures were installed with another smaller unveiling.

The Battle of Lake Erie was a naval battle fought between the United States Navy and the British Royal Navy on September 10, 1813,  in western Lake Erie during the War of 1812. At 11:45 am the British Fleet, under Commodore Robert Barclay aboard the Detroit, opened with long guns. American Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry aboard the Lawrence, supported by two schooners, attacked the Detroit and then the Queen Charlotte. Detroit was lost and all other vessels damaged, their sails entangled or out of action. The battle ended at 2:30 pm with all British ships captured and survivors taken as prisoners. British suffered 41 dead, 94 wounded and 306 captured. American casualties were 27 dead and 96 wounded.

AMHERSTBURG NAVY YARD
L'ARSENAL DE
LA MARINE DE AMHERSTBURG

A Navy Yard was built here in 1796 to replace Detroit as
the base and supply depot for the Provincial Marine on
Lakes Erie and Huron. In 1812 the GENERAL HUNTER and
QUEEN CHARLOTTE, built here, took part in the capture of
Detroit. The next year, his supply lines cut, Robert Barclay’s
poorly equipped fleet, including the DETROIT, was defeated
by Oliver Perry, U.S.N., in the battle of Lake Erie. This
reverse led the British to burn the Navy Yard on 22 Sep-
tember 1813, before withdrawing from Amherstburg.

The cairn for the Amherstburg Navy Yard National Historic Site was originally erected in 1931 with a Fosbery style plaque, which was replaced around 1977 with the current Roselawn, bilingual style of plaque. There are also two illustrative plaques with images for this designation. There is another plaque on the cairn for the Pro Patria National Historic Event.

Amherstburg Navy Yard was constructed in 1796 after British forces vacated Detroit and relocated downstream to the eastern side of the Detroit River. The yard, used to construct and repair vessels, served as the hub of the British Naval presence on the Upper Great Lakes. The yard’s facilities included a large storehouse, two blockhouses, a timber yard with a saw pit, and a wharf. To the north of the naval yard, the British built Fort Amherstburg, at what is now Fort Malden National Historic Site of Canada, and to the south, a settlement, which became known as Amherstburg, sprang up to supply the fort and naval yard. For almost 20 years, the yard produced vessels ranging from small, open bateaux, to full-sized, three-masted, ship-rigged men-of-war. Amherstburg Navy Yard played a significant defensive role during the War of 1812, as the ships it produced enabled the British to maintain control of the area.

Following the British defeat at the Battle of Lake Erie in 1813, Amherstburg was evacuated and both the fort and the navy yard were burnt prior to the American capture. The Americans later built an installation named Fort Malden on the ruins of Fort Amherstburg. Although Fort Malden was returned to the British in July 1815, the area never regained its pre-war importance as a fort and naval yard. The fort was used briefly during the rebellions of 1837-38 before its closure in 1858.

Amherstburg Navy Yard was designated a National Historic Site of Canada in 1928.
