ANDREW EDWARD MCKEEVER 1859-1919

World War I flying "Ace", McKeever was born and raised
in Elma Township. He enlisted with the Canadian Expedi-
tionary Force in 1916 but, attracted by the life of the fighter
pilot, transferred to Britain's Royal Flying Corps once he
was overseas. From May 1917 to January 1918 McKeever
was posted to the 11th Squadron on the Western front. An
outstanding operator of the two-seater Bristol Fighter, he,
with his various observers or gunners, shot down some 30
enemy aircraft during reconnaissance missions and offen-
sive patrols, earning the Military Cross and Bar and the
Distinguished Service Order for his "conspicuous gallantry
and devotion to duty." At the end of the war, McKeever
returned home where, shortly afterward, he died as the re-
sult of a car accident.

Erected by the Ontario Heritage foundation, Ministry of Citizenship and Culture.

On September 16, 1920, this monument was installed at West McGillivray, Ontario in memory of veterans of the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War. This monument was moved to the hamlet of Lieury, Ontario in the year 1956. There are sixteen men's names of the surrounding countryside on this memorial. Crowds by the hundreds attended this unveiling, including returned veterans and school children lined up in front of the township hall, then marched four abreast to the erection site. Most of the service men were from the "C" Company 135th Battalion "Pride of Middlesex". Lieut. W.Ulens, M.C., unveiled the cenotaph and Major A.Graham, Chaplain in the Battalion, was the chief speaker. Reeve Joseph Poore acted as chairman and Lieut. Co. Bart. Robson, Commander of the 135th Battalion, was guest speaker. Chaplain Graham's words were "We, the people of McGillivray unveil this monument as a token of sacrifice to the honour and glory of God, for truth, and humanity for the sake of those who have passed on."

This memorial, housed in the former Stratford Normal School, was erected by students and staff in memory of one teacher and several students killed during the First World War.

Before a large crowd on 31 March 1921, a memorial window was unveiled to the late Lieutenant H.V. Pickering, former English Master at the Normal School and the 13 former students of the school who gave their lives in the First World War. A Union Jack that had been covering the window was lowered and a moment of silent reflection was taken. Two regiment colonels were asked to make remarks on the solemn occasion, and both Colonel J.L. Youngs – whose son Jack died in the war – and Colonel G. Williams spoke eloquently about their fallen brethren and the human cost of war.

Sir Galahad is depicted in the center of the window and above him are the angels of his vision (in the poem by Alfred Lord Tennyson). In front of Sir Galahad are white lilies and a few scarlet poppies. Behind him is an oak tree with clinging clematis. They are bordered by laurel leaves reversed, representing victory through death.

This center is surrounded by a paneled frame. The right and left sides of the frame list the names of the fallen on shields with the chief battles of the First World War listed above and below the shields. Below the side panels, the dates 1914-1919 are on shields surrounded by laurel and surmounted by crowns. The panel beneath the center contains emblems of Canada and Great Britain.

The top of the window contains three panels, the two side ones have emblems of the infantry and cavalry, with the Tudor rose cleverly inserted. The center panel has the school crest - a burning lamp with the motto ‘docendo discimus’ surrounded by laurel and maple leaves. The background of the panels is purple and much of the design is in gold, which are the school's colours.

Friends of Stratford Normal School Heritage was founded in 1994 to save the 10-feet high stained glass window from potentially being demolished with the rest of the building. City council at the time decided to purchase the building from the province and repurpose it, so it would not be torn down.

THE STRATFORD
WAR MEMORIAL

This magnificent sculpture by Walter S. Allward (1875-1955)
depicts the supremacy of right over brute force and was
unveiled on 6 November 1922 to honour the soldiers from
Stratford and surrounding counties who fell in the First World
War. It was designed in 1921 as Allward prepared the models
for the towering and majestic Canadian monument at Vimy
Ridge in France.

Both sculptures show the same dedication to technique, to
inventive composition, and to the use of classical figures in
dramatic settings.

The upright figure, representing spiritual man, turns his back
on the parting figure of brute force. "They broke the sword
and brought peace to our land" is inscribed on the base.

The sculpture was commissioned by Stratford's War Memorial
Committee (Willilam Preston, Chair) in 1920. Civic leader and
committee member R. Thomas Orr championed the project
and Allward's poignant, powerful vision for it.

Walter S. Allward, long considered on of Canada's greatest
artists, was designated by Canada as a "Person of National
Historic Significance" in 2002.

The Soldiers War Memorial Committee was formed in 1920. The group worked with the Stratford Chamber of Commerce and collected $19,000, of the $25,000 needed to build a memorial, from the citizens of Stratford, North Easthope, Downie and Ellice Townships. The remaining cost was covered by grants from municipal councils. Sculptor Walter S. Allward was invited to submit a design for the monument.

The Stratford War Memorial was erected in 1920 and unveiled on November 6, 1922, in the heart of the City and at the converging point of the four townships. The memorial features two bronze sculptures mounted on one of three granite blocks, which are positioned on a granite base comprised of two layered slabs. The granite came from the Stanstead quarry in Quebec. The figures symbolize the triumph of right over brute force, a theme that Allward had previously explored in his sketch model The Service of Our Men–Crushing the Power of the Sword, 1918, for the proposed Bank of Commerce War Memorial, and would revisit at the Vimy Memorial in France.

The first statue is a spiritual man represented at the highest point of the base that connects the two statues, his head looking upward toward the heavens and his left hand holding a palm branch, symbolizing peace. The second statue, representing strife, walks down an incline, dragging a broken sword in defeat.

The memorial was modified in 1955 and a rededication ceremony was held on May 9, 1955. Bronze plaques bearing the names of those who died in the First World War, Second World War, and Korean War were installed on the fronts and backs of the two side blocks, covering the original engraved inscriptions, which by then had become almost illegible. In 1961, the memorial was moved to Memorial Park.

In 2018, volunteers Nancy Stotts Jones and Lorna Harris, in partnership with the Stratford-Perth Archives, installed a bronze plaque designed by Scott McKowen that describes the significance of the memorial and Allward. On November 7, 2021, the Stratford-Perth Archives launched a webpage exploring Allward’s legacy and the significance of his work in Stratford. It is part of the Allward memorial project, a four-year effort to better tell the story behind the Stratford War Memorial and its world-renowned creator.

Sculptor Walter S. Allward left school at fourteen and learned about sculpture through books and magazines at the local library and by studying replicas at a nearby museum. By twenty, he had won his first commission. One of Allward’s first projects was through Sir Edmund Walker, President of the Bank of Commerce. In 1918, Walker asked Allward for memorial ideas honouring bank employees who had served and Allward submitted two wax models sculptures. The first, The Service of Our Women—Healing the Scars of War, depicts a woman sowing seeds on rocky incline strewn with war debris, including a broken canon. The second, The Service of Our Men–Crushing the Power of the Sword, portrays a man standing over a recumbent figure with his sword cast aside, symbolizing the brute beast of willful war waged by a misguided nation. The sculptures were never used, but his proposals explored ideas that would be expressed in his future war memorials: Stratford, 1919–22; Peterborough, 1921–29; and Brantford, 1921–33.
