[plaque/plaque]

The Honourable Barney Danson energetic dedication to the creation of a new
Canadian War Museum was based, in part, on his desire to memorialize the brave
Canadians who died in war, including his four closest war-time friends,
all of whom were killed in action.

In memory of

Sgt Fred B. Harris-Queen's Own Rifles of Canada
Lt Gerald Rayner Queen's Own Rifles of Canada
Lt Earl R. Stoll-Queen's Own Rifles of Canada
Lt Harlan David Keely-Irish Regiment of Canada

Sgt Fred B. Harris - Queen's Own Rifles of Canada
Lt Gerald Rayner - Queen's Own Rifles of Canada

Erected by the Canadian War Museum, this memorial, the Barney Danson theatre and plaque, is dedicated to the memory of Barnett (Barney) Danson, PC, CC, and to his four closest war-time friends killed in action; Sgt Fred B. Harris-Queen's,Lt Gerald Rayner, Lt Earl R. Stoll, Lt Harlan David Keely.

The Canadian War Museum wanted to memorialize Barney Danson's leadership and tireless support for the construction of a national shrine to Canada's military history. Danson was a former defence minister under Pierre Trudeau. He chaired the advisory committee that resulted in the war museum being opened in 2005, and a theatre there is named after him.

The following is an excerpt from "Thestar.com" OTTAWA—Erected by the Canadian War Museum, this memorial, the Barney Danson theatre and plaque, is dedicated to the memory of Barnett (Barney) Danson, PC, CC, WWII soldier and former Minister of National Defence.

Barney Danson’s life was forged on the battlefields of Normandy, where he was wounded, lost his three best friends and the sight in one eye, and found himself as a person.

Danson, who died on 18 October 2011, returned from the Second World War to found a successful business and an equally successful political career that saw him become defence minister. He went on to win many awards, help build the Canadian War Museum and be named a companion of Order of Canada.

But it was his experiences at war with the Queen’s Own Rifles of Canada, where he rose to lieutenant from ordinary rifleman, that had the greatest impact on him.

Danson was born in Toronto in 1921 and enlisted in February 1939, right after his 18th birthday and even before the start of the war.

The buck private was eventually commissioned a lieutenant before landing in Normandy. His combat career lasted only a few weeks before he was badly wounded.

Like many veterans, Danson came home from the war determined to make changes in the world he had fought for. First, however, he had to build a business and make a life for himself and wife Isobel, the young British woman he had married while overseas in 1943.

He went to work in the family insurance business, formed his own plastics company and established a consulting firm.

In 1968, Danson won the Toronto riding of York North. He was Trudeau’s parliamentary secretary from 1970 to 1972, and minister for urban affairs in 1974. Later became one of the last defence ministers with military service in his resume.

As defence minister, one of his proudest moments was the selection of the CF-18 as the new generation of fighter-bomber, even though it wasn’t actually purchased during his tenure.

Danson was defeated in the 1979 federal election and returned to Toronto and his business after almost 11 years in the House of Commons.

Although Danson had never been active as a war veteran, he began to consider what he could do to honour the fading memory of his lost companions, whom he remembered as “the beautiful, young Canadians.”

When asked to produce a TV series on Canada’s war, entitled No Price Too High, he jumped at it.

When the Canadian War Museum stumbled into a controversy in the mid-1990s over a plan to build an addition with a special Holocaust Gallery, Danson was called in to lead an advisory committee and straighten out the mess. He raised another couple of million dollars and helped win federal approval for a whole new museum.

Danson was named an officer of the Order of Canada in 1996. In 2008 he was promoted to a companion of the order. In 2007, he was named a chevalier of France’s Legion of Honour.

In 2000, the Conference of Defence Associations gave him their Vimy Award, an honour given annually to someone who has made a great contribution to defence.

Thomas Fuller Passage

The name of this passageway honours the late Captain Thomas G. Fuller, D.S.C.**,
M.I.D., R.C.N.V.R., whose operational exploits on loan to the Royal Navy during the
Second World War, serving in and commanding flotillas of Motor Torpedo Boats and
Gun Boats, earned him great distinction as "The Pirate of the Adriatic". His
"Nelson-like" tactics of thwarting, sinking, boarding and capturing enemy shipping
revolutionized coastal forces small boat warfare, insufficiently recognized as R.C.N.V.R.
operations that deserve a better place in Canadian military history. Acknowledged by
Marshal Tito as an "Hon. Commandant National Army of Liberation" for his strategic
support of the Partisans in liberation of Yugoslavia, Thomas George Fuller is fondly
remembered as a genuine Canadian hero, a wonderful husband and father,
"master builder" and philanthropist.

Passage Thomas-Fuller

Thousands of Canadians from across the country serve in the Canadian Armed Forces as Naval Reservists during times of conflict and peace while also engaging in civilian life. Established in 1923, Canada’s Naval Reserve was the vision of Rear-Admiral Walter Hose who, as director of the naval service in the interwar years, authorized the creation of a ‘citizen navy’ to train sailors from non-coastal cities and bolster pan-Canadian support for the fledgling Royal Canadian Navy.

With divisions in major cities across Canada, the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve became critical for mobilization efforts during the Second World War (1939-1945). Post-war, new generations of sailors continued to be recruited and trained as Reservists. Today’s Naval Reservists deploy both domestically and internationally, taking part in Canadian Armed Forces operations and exercises.

The National Naval Reserve Monument dates back to the 50th anniversary of the Naval Reserve. In the lead-up to this notable half century milestone, Ottawa was an ideal place to celebrate the national significance of this anniversary given its role as Canada’s capital and the symbolic center of our democracy.

As part of the celebrations, a large anchor was selected from a Halifax shipyard and sent by rail to be emplaced adjacent to HMCS Carleton, Ottawa’s naval reserve unit. The monument was installed by the Thomas Fuller Construction company, operated by retired Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve member Captain Thomas Fuller (1908-1994), a decorated Second World War naval hero who also served as commanding officer of HMCS Carleton from 1948-1951.

On May 6, 1973, in unison with Battle of the Atlantic Sunday, the National Naval Reserve Monument was unveiled by Governor General Roland Michener in a ceremony with the ship’s company of HMCS Carleton. A plaque on the monument echoes the words of Winston Churchill that “The reservist is twice the citizen,” a reminder of the dual identity of Naval Reservists.

On October 12, 2023, the monument was rededicated as part of the Naval Reserve’s 100th anniversary by Her Excellency the Right Honourable Mary Simon, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada.

This plaque was erected by the members of the regiment and the Guards Association (Governor General’s Foot Guards) and dedicated to the memory of those Officers, Non-Commissioned Officers and Guardsmen who gave their lives while serving with the Regiment in the Second World War.

During the Second World War the Governor General’s Foot Guards was mobilized in May 1940. In 1942 the regiment was re-rolled to become an armoured unit to address the need for more armoured units in the Canadian Army, assuming the name “21st Canadian Armoured Regiment (Governor General’s Foot Guards)”. It embarked for Great Britain on 23 September 1942. On 24 July 1944, it landed in France as part of the 4th Armoured Brigade, 4th Canadian Armoured Division and it continued to fight in northwest Europe until the end of the war taking part in the battle of Normandy, the battle of the Scheldt, and the Rhineland. Over the course of the war the Regiment’s casualties were 101 dead and 284 wounded. Forceful III, a Sherman tank that served with the regiment is currently on display at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa and is dedicated to the memory of the members of the Governor General’s Foot Guards killed during the Second World War.
