This Legion branch was dedicated to Captain Matthew J. Dawe on 1 November 2013. Born 1 April 1980 to a military family, Captain Dawe moved to Kingston in 1991. A Private in the Princess of Wales Own Regiment, he later attended the Royal Military College where he graduated as Cadet Wing Commander. He was then posted to 3rd Battalion, Princess Patricia's Canadian Light Infantry, as a Platoon Commander. Like his father Peter and his brothers Peter Jr, Philip and James, he felt a strong affinity to the Canadian Forces.

On 4 July 2007, during Operation LUGER - a joint operation with the Afghan National Army and one he planned and named for his son Lucas who turned two that day - the vehicle in which he was travelling was struck by a remotely detonated improvised explosive device in the Panjwaii District.  The explosion killed Captain Dawe and five Canadian soldiers, as well as an Afghan interpreter.

Captain Dawe served his country proudly, with a strong conviction and compassion that many find to be inspiring to this day. His total dedication to his country, family and friends, valued by all, remain his legacy. He would be very humbled by this honour. May all those that serve be inspired by his example.

Truth Duty Valour!

2364 Air Commodore Leonard J. Birchall CM, OBE, CFC, OO, CD

In the word of Sir Winston Churchill he will be known as The "Savior of Ceylon" (1915-2004) Le "Sauveur du Ceylan"

An extraordinary leader, a distinguished RMC ex-cadet, RCAF career officer, former commandant of RMC, honourary colonel of 413 Squadron and until his death on September 10th 2004, the Vice-Patron of the RMC Club. On April 4th 1942, then Squadron Leader Birchall was piloting a Catalina flying boat over the Indian Ocean when he sighted and reported an advancing Japanese fleet intent on attacking Ceylon. The Allied Forces response to Birchall's call successfully blunted the force of the attack. However Birchall's Catalina and its crew of eight were shot down and he, along with five survivors, spent the remaining years as Japanese prisoners of war. It was as a senior officer among the POWs that Birchall's true leadership skills came to the forefront as he confronted his captors, often risking his own life in order to preserve the morale, dignity and safety of the lower ranked prisoners of war.

Memorial Staircase Windows, which were erected in 1983 by Robert Jekyll & Sarah Hall of Toronto at the MacKenzie building at Royal Military College of Canada. Since the mid-70s Robert Jekyll has been closely associated with the development of stained glass in Canada. In 1974 he was founding president of a national association of stained glass artists.

The windows combine abstract non figurative imagery with traditional stained glass leading and colourful, handblown antique glass.  Jekyll's abstract designs employ undulating, rhythmic leadlines with saturated colours, imparting a strong sense of movement and dynamism.

The windows depict the McKenzie building and other architectural sites at the Royal Military College of Canada. It also depicts military symbols representing Army, Navy and the Air Force such as an anchor, a dove. and a sword. Finally it depicts peace symbols such as a hand, a dove and the Earth.

The United Nations Disengagement Observer Force Memorial, also known as the Private Perry Porter Memorial, was erected in 1984 in memory of Private Perry Porter, a signalman serving in the Golan Heights with the United Nations Disengagement Observer Force (UNDOF), who was killed on November 6, 1980, when the antenna tower on which he was working collapsed. Private Porter was the son of Earl and Thora Marie Porter of Woodstock, New Brunswick.

Roger Ladouceur, a member of the crew who was working on the tower when Private Porter was killed, returned to the Golan Heights in 1984 and was instrumental in the memorial's construction.

The memorial is made of concrete and stones from the Golan Heights region. A pair of lineman's spurs is mounted in front. Over the years, the memorial has been refurbished several times and now honours the memory of all the Canadian soldiers who have lost their lives while serving on United Nations peacekeeping missions in the area. The plaques on either side of the memorial list the names of Canadians that passed away during the following operations: United Nations Emergency Force I (UNEF I) on one side, and UNEF II, United Nations Truce Supervision Organization (UNTSO), and United Nations Disengagement Observer Forme (UNDOF) on the other side, with Private Porter on the front also representing UNDOF.

Located centrally near the Camp Ziouani entrance, all Canadian soldiers saluted the memorial as a mark of respect and reverence, whenever they passed by it. After Canada’s decision to reduce its troop contribution to UNDOF, the memorial was delicately extracted in preparation for its 26 kilometre trek to Camp Faouar, in Syria on July 20, 2005. The memorial was again placed in a prominent resting spot near Club 17, the all-ranks mess used by Canadians posted to Camp Faouar.

In 2006, plans were finalized to move the entire Canadian contingent back to Canada and it was decided that the monument should be repatriated as well, to allow Canadians to properly honour and maintain it. The monument was removed from Camp Faouar on February 24, 2006.

Since arriving at Canadian Forces Base Kingston, a new concrete pad has been poured for the monument and it has been placed in front of the Military Communications and Electronics Museum.

On Remembrance Day 2019, the Commandant of the Royal Military College of Canada unveiled this LAV III Monument in recognition of the over 40,000 soldiers who served in Afghanistan. The ceremony was supported by the Royal Military College with a guard, choir and bugler, sentries from the Prince of Wales Own Regiment, and members of Canadian Forces Base Kingston. The monument was donated by the Royal Military College of Canada Class of 1980 on the occasion of their 35th Reunion.

Light Armoured Vehicles (LAV) III were originally manufactured by Canadians at General Dynamics Land Systems Canada in London, Ontario and were instrumental to troops in carrying out their missions while in Afghanistan. The monuments were created from decommissioned LAV III hulls, donated by the Government of Canada and built by Militex Coating Inc. and Fanshawe College students in London, Ontario.

On November 5, 2014, the Canada Company Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) lll Monument Program was launched to recognize the 40,000 Canadians Armed Forces who served in Afghanistan and to commemorate the 162 Canadians who lost their lives. The program closed after awarding 33 monuments to communities across Canada.
