In 1934, the last, and the most unusual, Great War memorial was added to the Royal Military College. Two bosses (i.e. gargoyle-like) heads depicting the cartoon characters Old Bill and Alfie were placed over the side door of Yeo Hall, the newly constructed Cadet Dining Hall. Old Bill and Alfie were two of the several cartoon characters created during the War by Captain Bruce Bairnsfather, Royal Warwickshire Regiment. These characters represented 'everyman' -the scruffy, but rock solid, front-line soldiers who, "coped with everything the enemy, their NCO's, their officers or the Staff could throw at them." The caption of his most famous cartoon, "Well, if you knows a better 'ole go to it," became the catch phrase of a generation.

Why Old Bill and Alfie found their way to RMC is unknown, but presumably the Commandant of the day was a fan (every RMC Commandant from 1919 to 1945 was a veteran of the Great War). A small officers' mess was tucked into a back corner of the second floor of this newly built Cadet Dining Hall. The stairs leading up to the Mess were accessed by the side entrance decorated with the two famous heads and the bar was called, "Bill and Alfie's". The RMC Officers' Mess was relocated long ago, but the original bar area, now incorporated into a greatly expanded Cadet Mess and Recreation Centre, is still known as 'Bill and Alfie's".

On September 28th, 2010 two pieces of artwork 'Lone Piper' by Joanne Gervais and ‘Where have all the flowers gone’ artwork by Bruce Sherman (2010) were formally accepted by 13987 Brian Bailey, President of the RMC Club as part of the alumni weekend festivities. The paintings commemorate the 60th anniversary of the Royal Military College of Canada band (1950-2010). The Lone Piper wears the distinctive uniform of a RMC band piper. The original painting 'Where have all the flowers gone' was gifted to 22621 Tara Dawe in memory of 22596 Capt Matt Dawe (RMC 2000) by the artist, a family friend of S150 LCol (Ret’d) Peter Dawe. Captain Matt Dawe, 27 years old, was killed along with five other Canadian soldiers and an interpreter by a roadside bomb on Wednesday, July 5th, 2007. He has left behind his parents Lieutenant-Colonel and Mrs. Peter Dawe, his wife Tara and their son to grieve. The Commemorative paintings hang in the practice room(s) in Yeo hall. The donations were made by RMC alumni, Victoria Edwards and Gus Nelson.

The Chalmers Church First World War Plaque honours the men who fell and those who served during the First World War.

The Chalmers Church Second World War Plaque is also located here.

Note: In 1890, the Chalmers Free Presbyterian Church was planned at the triangle of land formed by Barrie Street, Clergy Street and Earl Street. In anticipation of the union of the Congregational Church, Methodist Church and Presbyterian Church, the Congregationalist Church of Kingston elected to join Chalmers in 1922. The Union of the churches officially took place in 1925 with the formation of the United Church of Canada.

The plaque at the Crerar Entrance to the Royal Military College of Canada was donated by the class of 1935 in October 1985. It is dedicated to the memory of General H.D.G. Crerar.

Henry Duncan Graham Crerar was born in Hamilton, Ontario, on April 28, 1888. He was educated at the Royal Military College in Kingston, Ontario, from 1906 to 1909. During the First World War he served with distinction as a Canadian Field Artillery officer on French and Flanders battlefields and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order.

During the Second World War, Crerar was Brigadier General Staff at the Canadian Military Headquarters in London, then Chief General Staff in Ottawa where he improved the efficiency of National Defence Head Quarters, set up emergency recruitment and training programs for territorial defence, and a training program for officers and soldiers slated to serve overseas.

In 1941, Crerar returned to England and was appointed General Officer Commanding, I Canadian Corps. He was in the middle of the crisis that followed the Dieppe Raid and drew lessons from the failure. In March 1944, he took over the command of the 1st First Canadian Army, replacing General McNaughton.

Under Crerar’s command the First Canadian Army played a major role in the Falaise Gap in August 1944. Because of severe illness, Crerar was temporarily replaced by Major-General Guy Simonds during the Battle of the Scheldt. In February 1945 Crerar was back and during the Rhineland campaign he found himself in command of a 450,000-men army, including Allied units under First Canadian Army command. After the war, he was in charge of the demobilization process.
