This bridge is named in honour of Corporal Matthew Dinning.

Matthew David James Dinning was born in March 1983 at Richmond Hill and raised in Wingham, Ontario, where he was very active in high school and community sports. Following graduation from high school, he completed a Police Foundations Program at Westervelt College in August 2002 and joined the Canadian Forces in May 2003 as Military Police. Completing his military police training in Spring 2004, he was posted to CFB Petawawa and subsequently transferred to 2 MP Platoon in May 2005. Soon after, he volunteered and was selected to be a member of the Close Protection Team assigned to protect the Regional Command South Commander, Brigadier General David Fraser, in Afghanistan. Following intensive training, he deployed to Kandahar in February 2006. On April 22, 2006, Corporal Matthew Dinning was one of four soldiers killed by a roadside bomb in Gumbad, Afghanistan.

This part of Highway 21- Bluewater Veterans Highway - was officially dedicated to Canada's war veterans on January 24, 2009. "There probably isn't a more appropriate Highway in Ontario to be named for our war veterans," Goderich Town Councillor and local historian David Yates told a crowd of nearly 70 at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 109 last Saturday. The masses gathered on Jan. 24 to witness a highly anticipated milestone for the connected Huron-Bruce Branches as they unveiled new signage issued by the Ministry of Transportation dedicating a portion of the King's Highway 21 from Goderich to Kincardine as the Bluewater Veteran's Highway.

The dedicated section begins where the 33rd Regiment Drill once marched, Yates explained, and follows along past two important air bases used for training during wartime efforts where thousands of young Canadians set out to protect Canadian freedoms. "What many people don't know is that 40 paid the ultimate price along that stretch of road in training accidents," Yates said. "There can't be a better stretch of highway to honour their memory and the memory of all those men and women who served their country."

The long-sought designation is the result of nearly two years of combined effort from the 183 Kincardine and 109 Goderich Branches. Spearheaded by 109 Branch June Pyette and the birthday committee, members waded through months of red tape and miscommunication. The Legion set out to have the stretch from Kincardine to Goderich renamed back in 2007 as part of the Legions' 80th anniversary list of projects. The designation bid was apparently lost in the shuffle within the Ministry of Transportation for nearly two years, during which time Pyette kept a strong presence with Ministry representatives and pushed the designation back onto the plates of the authorities.

Among members of the Kincardine and Goderich Legions', an encouraging number of Huron and Bruce politicians lent their support and appreciation, including Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh Reeve Ben Van Diepenbeek, Huron County Warden Ken Oke, Kincardine Mayor Larry Kraemer, and Bruce County Warden Bill Goetz. "This is just about the greatest thing I've seen for a while in memory of our veterans," said Van Diepenbeek. The Legion, working partnership will all branches from Kincardine to Goderich, have now successfully installed four signs along the route between Amberley and Goderich.

The cost per sign is approximately $700, and Legion Branches have made final commitments, along with generous donations from local Unions and residents, who were thanked during the Saturday celebration. The highway has become just the fifth in Canada to be dedicated to the memory of veterans, joining Highway 416 in Ottawa - Veterans Memorial Highway, Route#15, Veteran's Memorial Highway in Dieppe, New Brunswick, Veterans Memorial Parkway, a 9.2 km expressway located in London, and the stretch of Highway 401 running from Trenton to Toronto officially renamed the Highway of Heroes in remembrance of Canada's fallen soldiers.

"Legion members and I are pleased this project has reached its conclusion," said Pyette. "This stretch of highway will remain a lasting monument to all those who lost their lives, served or are serving our great country." All four signs are now visible along the highway, and the Legion is planning a public dedication at Goderich's Dutch memorial gardens on Victoria Street on the 65th D-Day anniversary, June 6, 2009.

On July 3 1970, the Dutch Canadian community of Goderich and surrounding area presented a fountain to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands from German occupation during the Second World War, and to honour the Canadian soldiers who made it possible. The fountain was built by area residents of Dutch ancestry.

On May 24, 1985, the Dutch community replaced the old fountain with a new, larger one to commemorate the 40th anniversary and to say "Thank You Canada!". In 1995, the 50th anniversary of the liberation of Holland, the Dutch Canadian Community again said "Thank You Canada" by replacing the existing fountain with a new one. It is larger than its predecessor and the hope is that it will even better express the gratitude and joy associated with this event.

The fountain consists of a circular, slightly dished concrete pad with a central water jet. Surrounding this are five petal points of a tulip, an emblem of Holland, and a circle of people with outstretched arms and joining hands. These figures are meant to evoke a sense of brotherhood, celebration, freedom, liberation and hope; renewal is symbolized by the jets of water in summer and ice patterns that are formed in the winter.

The dedication was held on Saturday, May 20, 1995 at 1:30 p.m. The parade was formed at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 109. This is a Zone C-1 parade of mass colours. The parade proceeded to the memorial for a Service and then to Memorial Park for the Dedication. Music was performed by the Goderich Laketown Band, the Elgin Military Band of St. Thomas and the Seaforth Girls Band. It was a very festive day with a buffet being hosted by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 109 following the Service.

The cenotaph was designed by Jack Pryde and erected in the Library park just in time for the Remembrance Day service of 1965. It is made of white granite, 16 feet long and five feet thick at the base. The center column is 11 feet, six inches from the round to the top and the column is one foot thick.

This small parkette contains a beautiful garden and walkway, leading to the white granite memorial. Clinton was once home to CFB Clinton, the first Radar Training School in North America.

The cost of the cenotaph was between $4,500 to $5,000. The concrete footing was extra and volunteers came forward to help with a lot of that work.
