THE STORY OF BLYTH MEMORIAL HALL

In the late 1800s and early 1900s when many communities had already built town halls with large auditoriums to host local and touring concerts, Blyth's entertainment was confined to a number of small halls, many on the second floor of buildings. Industry Hall at the southwest-corner of Queen and Dinsley, for instance, today serves as the Masonic Temple. The Temperance Hall was on Dinsley Street. Following the sacrifices of many young lives from the community in the Great War of 1914-1918, the
community decided to honour their memory with a magnificent new hall.

COMMUNITY EFFORT
"One of the greatest days ever held here was celebrated Tuesday, June 3. There was a calathumpian parade and then the main feature of the day was the flights of two aeroplanes from Toronto which made some splendid ascensions. The receipts amounted to $2000 which is to be applied towards the memorial which the citizens are going to build to commemorate the brave deeds done by the boys from this section. This hall is to be built by voluntary contribution and this will give over $8,000. There is no doubt they will be able to go ahead and erect the hall at once."
— From the Huron Expositor, June 6, 1919

CORNERSTONE LAID

On July, 1920, with great ceremony the cornerstone of the new hall was laid. "This hall is a credit to the zeal and energy of the committee who have had charge, as it is probably the first time in the history of America where a hall costing more than $20,000 has been built by voluntary contributions. The plans were made by architect W. Murray of London. The hall will be a noble structure of stone, cement and brick with the following dimensions; Length 88 feet, Height 15 feet from ground, Width 52 feet, Stage 40 feet wide, Stage 20 feet deep. The lower storey will be fitted out with a council chamber, fire hall and other compartments in accordance to the plans now in the hands of the builders. The auditorium will have a seating capacity of 350 with gallery 150 making a total of 500."
— From the Clinton New Era, July 22, 1920

OPENING CEREMONY, JUNE 5, 1921
"The official opening of the Memorial Hall which has been erected here to commemorate the Blyth solider boys is to take place Sunday June 5, at 2:30 o'clock and also the unveiling of the memorial plaque which is a wonderful piece of work done by Rev. Mr. T. Telford. The sermon is to be preached by Rev. Mr. McKegney, of Clinton and the musical part will be taken by a united choir from the local churches. Then on Monday, June 6, Tuesday, June 7 and Wednesday evening, June 8 there will be three splendid entertainments put on in the hall."
— From The Clinton New Era, June 2, 1921.

THE BRITISH COMMONWEALTH
AIR TRAINING PLAN

With the outbreak of hostilities in 1939, one of Canada's
major responsibilities was to provide air training facilities
removed from the theatre of war. On December 17, 1939, the
Plan was inaugurated. The first schools were opened the
following year, among them No. 12 Elementary Flying Training
School here at Sky Harbour. At the height of operations
there were 39 training units in Ontario alone, including 32
air training schools. Before termination of the Plan on
March 31, 1945, these and 70 similar establishments elsewhere
in Canada trained over 300,000 aircrew, ground crew and
airwomen, mostly from Canada, Britain, Australia and New
Zealand but including American volunteers and escapees from
Nazi-occupied Europe.

The Varna Cenotaph (Originally called the Soldier Monument) was erected on June 26, 1920. The Cenotaph is dedicated to the fallen heroes of the First and Second World Wars. The dedication ceremony took place on June 26, 1920. Colonel Combe of Clinton gave vivid accounts of Canadian honour and glory. Reeve Elliott unveiled the Monument. When Morton Elliott became the reeve in 1919 for Stanley, he was instrumental in having a Memorial erected. The clerk donated the land which was on a lot located at the west end of Varna. In 1967 it was moved to the crossroad in Varna where it still stands. Source: Clinton News-Record, July 1st, 1920

In early 1918, Rev. Doctor Peter Strang, the chair of Usborne’s Sectional School No. 1, first raised the idea of a memorial to former students serving in the Great War and especially for those who had made the supreme sacrifice. His nephew, Private John Strang, age 20, had been killed in action in July 1917. Peter Strang was a member of the committee responsible for  collecting funds and to see that the work was completed. Strang made a generous donation and school trustees canvassed former students to raise the necessary money.

James Weeks, owner of the Marble Works in Exeter, ordered the work of the carving of the statue, to be carried out in Carrara, Italy. The statue was carved from a picture of a soldier, which was taken at London, Ontario, when the 161st Battalion was training at Wolsley Barracks. James Weeks was also commissioned by the committee to prepare the marble pedestal, which measured six and a half feet high, where the statue would be placed. When the memorial was completed, it was to be placed by him in front of Usborne’s Sectional School No. 1.

In December 1918, the five feet, six inches tall soldier statue travelled from Carrara, Italy to Exeter. The soldier’s cap and uniform, puttees and shoes were carved so perfectly that the wrinkles, folds, seams, etc. flowed into the marble making the soldier seem life like. A tree stump carved behind the soldier’s right foot is symbolic of a young life cut short.

The names inscribed on the pedestal were in memory of the men of Usborne’s Sectional School No. 1 who served in the First World War along with the names of those who paid the supreme sacrifice. The cost was $250 for the carving of the statue which was completed in Italy. With the addition of the base pedestal completed by James Weeks, the total price was $700. This same design was also copied by many other municipalities.

Peter Strang was given the honour of unveiling the memorial on Monday, March 31, 1919 at  Usborne’s Sectional School No. 1. A large crowd was present and due to cold weather the program, with exception of the unveiling, was carried out in the school house. One man drove 280 miles from Michigan to be present for the ceremony. This was one of the first memorials to be built and placed in Southwestern Ontario.

At the end of the Second World War a black granite base with the names of 18 Usborne men who served and one who was killed in the Second World War was added to the school monument. The unveiling of these names and the dedication took place on Sunday, November 11, 1945. In 1967, Canada's Centennial year, the cenotaph was moved as part of a centennial project, to the north west corner of the Usborne Central School property, with cooperation and help of R.E. Pooley Branch #167 of the Royal Canadian Legion. When Usborne Central School closed in 2012, the soldier cenotaph was moved again to the Hensall Union Cemetery by the Avon Maitland District School Board in the summer of 2012.
