JOHN WEIR FOOTE, V.C. 1904-1988

The only chaplain in World War II to receive the Victoria
Cross, Foote was born and raised in Madoc. He entered the
Presbyterian ministry in 1934 and enlisted in the Canadian
Chaplain Service five years later. Assigned to the Royal
Hamilton Light Infantry, Foote distinguished himself during
the ill-fated Dieppe Raid on August 19, 1942. Acting "with
utter disregard for his personal safety", he ministered to
the wounded and carried injured personnel from exposed
positions on the beach to first aid posts and landing craft,
all while under heavy enemy fire.Ultimately he was taken
prisoner because he refused to abandon those who could not
be evacuated. For his courageous actions he was awarded
the Victoria Cross, the British commonwealth's highest
military decoration for valour.

Erected by the Ontairo Heritage Foundation, Ministry of Culture and Communications.

The Madoc Cenotaph was unveiled with full military honours on November 28, 1928 and dedicated to the men of Madoc and vicinity who gave their lives during the First World War. The community owes a heartfelt appreciation to the Madoc Women's Institute who undertook the project, to the public spiritedness of Mr. and Mrs. Thompson, and the community effort.

Later, the names of those lost in the Second World War where engraved on the back.  A plaque acknowledging the Korean War was added on the front of the base.

A German Trench Mortar and the John Weir Foote V. C. Plaque are also located here.

The Rawdon Council set up a Memorial Committee in 1919. By March 5, 1920, a design was approved and a tender was awarded to J. McCallum of Kingston for $2000.00. On May 3, land at the Harold crossroads was purchased from Gordon A. Bailey, a local farmer, and the cenotaph was erected in 1922.

At the top of the cenotaph is a bust of a First World War soldier and below is an etched outline of a pair of crossed cavalry swords. The cenotaph is flanked by two Vickers machine guns. In April 1924, a caretaker was appointed by the Council and the purchase of a pole and flag was authorized.

In 1947, the Flinton Community Club decided to build a library as a memorial for Veterans of the Second World War. Flinton Memorial Library opened in 1949 and was dedicated in honour and in memory of those of Kaladar, Anglesea and Effingham Townships who fought in the Second World War. It was presented to the community by members of the Flinton Community Club as a tangible expression of the respect and devotion held for boys and girls who enlisted.
