In 1921, a committee was formed, on the initiative of the Stirling Horticultural Society "... to be responsible for the erection of a war memorial". The Stirling Cenotaph was constructed in 1927 in memory of the fallen of the First World War and dedicated at a service on June 22, 1927.

The address was given by Brigadier General A.E. Ross CMG, who performed the unveiling ceremony. The band of the Hastings & Prince Edward Regiment was in attendance. It was erected by public subscription.

After the Second World War it was refurbished and rededicated in 1948.

The Napanee Cenotaph's base is built of genuine Barre Vermont granite, known as the rock of ages, and is engraved with the names of 156 men who died in the First World War. The great sacrifice that they made in giving us victory and peace is represented in sheathed swords supporting the altar and maple leaves. The tribute to the victorious is bronze.

The Union Jack is carved on the four stones surrounding the base, each engraved with battle field names. The lettering of the inscription is driven in deep enough so that their own shadow makes them stand out.

The concrete foundation is five feet in the ground, the exact size of the stone. At extreme points, it measures 24 feet by 24 feet andthe total height from the ground to the top of the altar is 14 feet six inches. The cenotaph is hand finished, grass terraced, surrounded by a simple flower bed and walks leading to the Court House are placed on each side.

Henry Jakeman, Veteran of the First World War, instigated the project to build a memorial in Bethany to commemorate local soldiers from the First and Second World Wars. Funds were raised from all of Manvers Township and Reverend William Piercy from Bethany United Church designed the cairn.

Thomas Hampton, a stonemason from Warsaw, Ontario, completed the fieldstone facade. Pirie Monuments in Peterborough supplied the granite plaque bearing the names of the fallen and the granite cap of the cairn with the inscription “Lest We Forget”. The four First World War rifles on the top of the memorial were donated by Henry Jakeman.

It was erected on Manvers Township property and dedicated on Remembrance Day 1965. The Royal Canadian Legion and a Millbrook band headed a parade down the main street to the new memorial. Col. Arthur Thorne took the By-Pass Salute. The dedication ceremony was conducted by Reverend Reg Rose of St. Paul's Anglican church, Bethany with Russell Honey, MP unveiling the tablet bearing the names of the fallen. The first wreath laid was “To the Sons of Manvers” and placed by Mrs. George Waddell, a local Silver Cross mother who lost her son, Alfred Waddell off the coast of Borneo. Alfred's navigator, Jack Woodward, died with him. There are no known graves, but both names are inscribed on a Singapore War Memorial and commemorated in the First World War Book of Remembrance at the Parliament Hill.

Information provided by Kathy Morton, President of Manvers Historical Society.

The Bancroft Cenotaph was constructed in 1956 by the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 181. The base is constructed of local fieldstone and contains a marble insert from the original memorial which was erected by the Girls Club of the Allies. The marble insert lists the names of those lost in the First World War. The main part of the memorial lists the names of those lost in both World Wars and the Korean War.

The Dutch-Canadian Friendship Garden is also located here.

The plaques on this memorial were originally on the East side of the Westinghouse Electric Company building, located at 286 Sanford Avenue,  Hamilton. The plaques were likely taken off the building when Westinghouse sold the property in the 80's (or earlier) and relocated to the Hamilton Cemetery.

Depicted on the First World War tablet are flags arrayed behind the Great Seal of Canada, maple leaves in the backgrounds for the years 1914 and 1918, torches on the top corners, Corinthian columns separating the panels, excerpts from John McCrae’s In Flanders Fields and Laurence Binyon’s For the Fallen, bas reliefs depicting Air Force, Army and Navy, and a beaver.

The Second World War Tablet has a Coat of Arms, maple leaves in the backgrounds for the years 1939 and 1945, world globes, two torches and bas reliefs depicting Air Force, Army and Navy.
