Private Fred Tancrede Victor Savard (1910-1992) enlisted in the Canadian army and joined the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada (Princess Louise's) in 1944. Because of his artistic abilities, he moved from a rifle company to the Intelligence Section. In 1945, he was sketching (in charcoal) the ruined cathedral in Kleve, Germany, when he was approached by an artillery officer who asked if he could photograph Fred sketching. The officer took a photo or two and went on his way.

Years later, Fred taught at Danforth Technical in Toronto. At a reception, a new staff member asked Fred if had ever been in the army and in Kleve. As it turned out, he was the officer who took the photo. Private Savard's sketch accompanied by the photograph now reside together in the Savard Room along with his other wartime efforts: numerous oil sketches, several watercolours based on them, charcoal drawings, and charcoal portraits.

Some of Fred’s other paintings can be seen in Danforth Technical's auditorium – he painted portraits of a few of the school’s principals. The oil on canvas portrait of George Stephen was painted circa 1950 and signed and dated by the artist in 1953. Fred passed away in 1992.

From 1909 until 1987, the back room of the Officers' Mess of The Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada (Princess Louise's) was known as the "card room," "back room," or "games room." In 1986, as part of the Black Yesterdays Project (an oral history effort with the Regiment's Second World War Veterans), Private Fred Tancrede Victor Savard was interviewed, at the behest of Captain Claude Bissell, CC, who was the wartime Intelligence Officer. Private Savard, an artist, was a reinforcement to an Argyll rifle company and later joined the I section, which had vehicles and, thus, places to store the paints, brushes, and charcoal given to him by the Dutch. Fred had kept most of his wartime oil sketches, charcoal portraits and drawings and wanted a home for them. He met with the Regiment in the Mess and pleased by the proffered home for his work. For the most part, he donated his work. There was a nominal price for the collection and money was raised by the 1st Battalion (wartime) officers. It was called "The Savard Collection." The stunning collection quickly took ownership of the room itself and people started to call it “The Savard Room” by the power of the collection itself.

The 91st Regiment Canadian Highlanders Memorial was constructed in 1921 by Architect Stanley Thomas John Fryer (1885-1956). Stanley was born in Sawston, England on 4 May 1885 and educated at the Technical College in Bradford, England and at the Bradford City Art School. He articled with Edgar H. Parkinson in England from 1900 to 1905 and emigrated to the United States in 1907 where he worked in the offices of some of Boston's leading architects, including Cram, Goodhue & Ferguson, Allen & Collins, and with Coolidge & Carlson. He moved to New York and worked for Thomas Lamb before coming to Canada in 1911 and settling in Hamilton where he was employed as a draftsman by Munro & Mead in 1911-12. He worked in partnership with W. Grayson Brown in 1913-14 then became partners with William G. Evans in 1915.

The following year he went overseas with Canadian Forces and was severely wounded at Somme, France. Stanley served with the 13th and 26th Batteries, Canadian Field Artillery. He returned to Canada in 1917 and resumed practice in the partnership of Fryer & Evans from 1920 to 1926.

Stanley provided illustrations for Gun-Fire An Historical Narrative of The 4th Brigade Canadian Field Artillery in the First World War. He served as President of the Ontario Association of Architects in 1923-24 and then moved to Windsor in late 1925 to assist C. Howard Crane and Albert Kahn in Detroit before returning to Toronto in 1930 to work as draftsman for John A. Pearson. In 1931 he was noted as the designer working in the office of the City Architect of Toronto. He left Canada in 1936 and returned to England to work for the Ministry of Works until 1948 when he came back to Hamilton and joined his former partner who was by then practicing under the name of Murton & Evans. Fryer died in Hamilton on 27 January 1956.

These are the first Colours of the 91st Canadian Highlanders which originated in Hamilton on 1 September 1903 and is now designated the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders of Canada (Princess Louise's). The Colours were lodged for perpetual safekeeping in St. Paul's Presbyterian Church when the regiment was presented with new Colours on the occasion of its 25th anniversary in October 1928.

For 45 years they hung in the chancel, until deterioration made it necessary to remove them from the Colour pikes. They were restored, mounted in cases, and in 1977 were rededicated to the glory of God, in the name of all who honour him and cherish freedom.

St. Paul's Presbyterian Church was the Regimental Church of the 91st Canadian Highlanders from 1903 – 1931. At the turn of the 20th century, a number of Hamilton’s Scottish-Canadian organizations organized politically for the establishment of a kilted regiment as a visible symbol of Scottish culture. The movement’s leading figures were Presbyterians. The 91st Canadian Highlanders were gazetted on 16 September 1903 and Reverend Neil McPherson, minister of St. Paul’s Presbyterian became the chaplain of the new Regiment. One of the founders of the regiment and its first Commanding Officer, Lieutenant-Colonel William Alexander Logie, was a leading member of the congregation. Reverend McPherson was succeeded as chaplain by Reverend Doctor Daniel R. Drummond (1868–1931) on 2 October 1905 and St. Paul’s continued as the Regimental Church.

On 12 October 1931, the regiment had a new chaplain, Dr. William Barclay. After 28 memorable years at St. Paul’s, the regiment acquired a new regimental church and chaplain, and its direct association with St. Paul’s Presbyterian Church ended.
