IN FLANDERS FIELDS

In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amidst the guns below.

We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved, and were loved, and now we lie
in Flanders fields.

Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch, be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
in Flanders fields.

THE INTERNATIONALLY FAMOUS LINES WRITTEN AT YPRES
3 MAY 1915, BY COL. JOHN MCCRAE, SOLDIER, PHYSICIAN, POET,
BORN GUELPH, CANADA, NOV 1872. DIED IN FRANCE, 1918.

Former Mayor and recruitment officer Harry Westoby was the president of Guelph’s War Memorial Association which was formed on February 10, 1921. The committee included representatives from the Men’s and Women’s Canadian Club, Trades and Labour Council, YMCA and YWCA, Teacher’s Association, Foresters, Rotarians, Independent Labour Party, Knights of Columbus and city council. George Drew, who in the 1920s was a war hero, was the committee’s secretary.

The Guelph War Memorial was unveiled on July 3, 1927, by Eliza Bond, mother of fallen soldier Frank George Bond. The 29' high memorial was designed by Alfred Howell of Toronto. The base is Stanstead granite, the upper statuary is Barre granite and the front statue is bronze. The theme of the memorial is to represent immortality growing out of sacrifice. This is represented by the figure standing at the base with outstretched arms holding two swords upon the handles of which are wreaths of laurel, thus suggesting the idea of glory. At the back of this figure is a cross; hence the two ideas of glory and sacrifice are combined. In this figure is seen the strength of dignity, and the eye is instinctively carried upwards through the upward glance of the face and the towering character of the shaft which gradually merges into the group of immortality. Here is found a typical Canadian soldier holding in his right hand the staff of a flag, the flag being draped over his left shoulder.

Rising above this figure is a heavily draped female figure holding a tablet to which she points and the soldier is looking towards this tablet on which his name has been inscribed. The head of the figure looks upwards as though receiving inspiration at the time of pointing to the tablet. At the side of the Memorial are flags upon which are placed a soldier’s helmet and olive and palm leaves, suggestive of peace and victory.

The memorial remained unchanged until 1978 when it was moved further back to allow for road expansion. In 1984, it was modified by Mike LeClair to include the Korean War. The Roll of Honour was moved here in September 2007 from storage and restoration. It was formerly in the Memorial Gardens. In 2018, the Roll of Honour was updated to add names of those who lost their lives as a result of service during the First and Second World Wars that were not included on the original casting of the plaques.

Liberation 75 Tulips were imported from Holland and marked the 75th anniversary of the end of the Second World War, more specifically the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands by Canadian troops. The 750 orange tulips were donated in 2019 by local landscape architect Paul Brydges in memory of his grandfather Roy H. Moon, who landed on the beach in Normandy on D-Day, and who was wounded during the liberation of Holland and spent two years in a hospital recovering upon returning home.

A Vimy Oak that grows behind the Guelph War Memorial was also donated by the Brydges family in memory of their great-uncle Norman Brydges, who died in France shortly after the battle of Vimy Ridge.

More than half the funds for a Township of Puslinch memorial to honour those who served and died in the First World War were raised by donations at public events, including a 1919 welcome reception for returned soldiers in Morriston, featuring a baseball game, supper, and a concert on the school grounds. Over two thousand dollars were raised by the citizens of Puslinch and the Township provided the remainder.

The committee responsible for the memorial was led by Reeve Hugh Ross and included representatives from patriotic groups, community leaders and mothers. Women’s groups were responsible for a large part of the event planning and fundraising. The memorial design was selected by June 1919 and purchased from a supplier in Kitchener.

The cenotaph was unveiled the following year on June 3, 1920, by Reverend Buckland, Member of Provincial Parliament for South Wellington. The unveiling was an all-day event that included a welcome to the returned soldiers, who each received a gold locket and chain from the Township of Puslinch, and a banquet at the Aberfoyle Fair pavilion hosted by the Women’s Institute president Mrs. Hohenadel.

Later, inscriptions were added to honour the Second World War and on June 3, 1949, a memorial service was held at the memorial. After the Korean War, an inscription was added for that conflict.

A beautiful monument was installed in 2015 at the Jewish Community Cemetery on Bank Street, honouring those brave men of the Ottawa Jewish Community who fought and lost their lives in war. The three panel granite monument lists Ottawa community members who served and fell in the Great War, World War II, Israeli War of Independence and while on active duty with the Israeli Army.

Originally opened in the 1890’s, the Bank Street cemetery was showing its age by 2014. Thanks to a generous bequest from the estate of Irving and Ethel Taylor z"l, a campaign to raise the funds required was initiated, led by Irving and Ethel’s son Brent. Under the leadership of Brent, Jewish Memorial Gardens Chair Jonathan Freedman, and their campaign cabinet, the Ottawa Jewish Community rose to the challenge and the requisite funds were raised. After two summers of construction, a dedication ceremony was held on September 25, 2016, attended by several hundred community members to reveal the Memorial for fallen Jewish soldiers from Ottawa, remodeled grounds and to honour the extreme generosity of donors, without whom this project would not have been possible.

Frank Cauley Way was named in honour of Frank J Cauley in March 2007. In 1944, serving with the Royal Air Force Coastal Command, Frank Cauley's crew sank a German U-boat. Their Short Sunderland flying boat was damaged in the melée, but the crew flew home to safety after patching up the damaged plane with Wrigley's Spearmint gum. After the war, Cauley went into the civil service, then sales. He eventually launched his own business, Cardinal Institutional Sales, that supplied food staples to local firms. He married Barbara in September 1951, and together they raised two children, Glenn and Kathey, in Navan. Cauley volunteered for dozens of organizations, including the Salvation Army, the United Way, the Boys and Girls Club, the Kiwanis Club, the Dominion Institute and the Canadian Automobile Association. He has chaired the Red Shield Appeal and has sat on the board of the former Grace Hospital.
