In 1946, Gordon MacPherson and William Lett, two First World War Veterans, initiated a memorial project in the Strongfield community and formed a committee named the "Strongfield War Services Association." The Cenotaph was unveiled and dedicated on Decoration Day August 3, 1947.

Fred Clarke, a welder and welding instructor, was asked to build the soldier for the top of the memorial, and the community recruited volunteers to construct the base of concrete. Fred Clarke and his students at Moose Jaw Technical High School constructed the life-sized statue of a soldier leaning upon his rifleClarke was an award winning artist of national significance who was renowned for his attention to detail and his realistic portrayals. The sculpture is one of Clarke’s largest works.

The cenotaph's concrete base was covered with steel and painted in 1989 and again in October 2000. All work to keep the cenotaph in good condition is done by community volunteers.

The Sergeant Raphael Louis Zengel Plaque was erected by the Saskatchewan Heritage Foundation, Government of Saskatchewan in 1995.

Raphael Louis Zengel was born on 11 November 1894 in Faribault, United States. While he was still very young, he and his mother moved from the United States to a homestead in Saskatchewan. Zengel enlisted in the Canadian Expeditionary Force (CEF) in December 1914. He served overseas with the 5th Infantry Battalion, CEF, taking part in several raids on German trenches. For his role in one of these raids, near Passchendaele in Belgium in 1917, Zengel received the Military Medal.

On 9 August 1918, Sergeant Zengel was leading his platoon forward during the second day of the massive Allied offensive against the German lines around Amiens, in France. When he noticed a gap on the flank of his platoon and an enemy machine gun firing on the advancing Canadians at close range, he quickly decided to deal with the machine gun position himself. Rushing 200 metres ahead of his platoon, Zengel charged the German emplacement, killing two of the machine gun’s crew and compelling the rest to flee. Later that day, when the progress of the 5th Battalion was blocked by heavy machine gun fire, he demonstrated great tactical skill in directing the fire of his platoon to eliminate the enemy resistance. Sergeant Zengel’s courage, leadership and disregard for his own safety inspired his men, and were important factors in enabling the advance to continue. For his conduct on this day, he was awarded the Victoria Cross. Zengel died in Vancouver, British Columbia on 27 February 1977.

This memorial was erected around 1922 and is constructed of stones from the surrounding countryside fasted by cement with marble plaques. On the east side are listed the ten young men from Divisions 1 and 4 of the First World War who made the supreme sacrifice. The west side remembers the five who died in the Second World War. It was constructed due to the initiative of First World War veterans, and spearheaded by Jack Harrington and J.B. Stohr. Memorial services have been held at the site very November 11th since its construction. In the early years there was a full military service with Mr. George Currell, bugler, playing Taps and Reveille. As time passed the service became one of prayer and the laying of wreaths. Now the service broadcast by the CBC is viewed and the laying of wreaths on behalf of the Community, the Village and the Recreation Board are conducted. Even though the community is small, there are still at least twenty people in attendance at the services.
