Erected in 1922, this memorial is dedicated to the local war dead of the First and Second World Wars. The memorial was unveiled in January of 1923 at 1st Avenue and Gatacre Street. Since then, the memorial was moved to three different locations. During one of the moves, part of the memorial was broken and was never restored to its original state.

There are 41 First World War soldiers with a Ladysmith connection (born, lived or worked in Ladysmith and district) that are listed on the cenotaph. The list was compiled by the Ladysmith Chronicle and City Hall in the fall of 1922. People were requested to submit names of people they thought should be on the cenotaph. Soldiers listed come from the then City of Ladysmith and the surrounding district which was comprised of the original Oyster District, and included Saltair and Blaineys Crossing to the south of Ladysmith, and Brentons Crossing, North Oyster, Yellow Point, part of Cedar, Cassidy, South Wellington and Extension north of Ladysmith. Some of the war dead from areas north of Ladysmith were well known in Nanaimo as they were in Ladysmith and are on both cenotaphs. The original cenotaph dedicated in early 1923 had 40 names on it. Thomas Day's name was added later and so were the Korean War dates.

In November 1994 all the known island ex-service veterans, about 45, were contacted by telephone and invited to meet at a local hall to discuss the possibility of erecting a monument. This meeting, which was held about two weeks later with 30 veterans present, supported the concept of a monument. A committee of eight volunteers was organized to make investigations in respect to location, size, type, composition and funding. At this meeting it was also decided that this monument should be a Cairn rather than a Cenotaph, and that the project would be called the "Gabriola Memorial Cairn". In February 1995 a second meeting was called to hear committee recommendations and to discuss the project in general. At this meeting the following was determined: the location was suggested as being placed on the lawn of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police detachment's office, other locations were discussed but rejected for various reasons. Composition would be a 4` x 4` x 4` concrete base and would be mounted on an island sandstone of appropriate size. The sandstone should be flat on one side so that a bronze and cooper plaque could be mounted on it and the Cairn was not to be more than 6 - 6.5` in height. After much discussion it was decided that the plaque should bear the Veteran Affairs Canada "Canada Remembers" logo. The veterans stated that the Cairn should be for all who served and not just for those who served overseas or at home in the Armed Forces. Many citizens served Canada in other important facilities, such as, hospitals, shipyards, aircraft and munitions factories. The veterans also thought it would be most appropriate for the Cairn to be unveiled and dedicated on the 50th Anniversary of VE Day, May 8, 1995. Since only a handful of island veterans were members of service organizations, such as, the Royal Canadian Legion and the Royal Canadian Naval Association and since there was no Gabriola Island veterans' organization, it was decided that the project funding would be by individual donations from veterans, and the sale of "Canada Remembers" lapel pins. The Gabriola Lions Club were also to be approached for funding. In March 1995 various tasks were allotted to committee members and after several meetings, the project began to take shape. The Royal Canadian Mounted Police were most co-operative and kindly arranged for the Cairn to be placed on their property. A suitable sandstone was found after much searching. The plaque was then ordered while local trades people volunteered to provide gratuitously both labour and material. The Veteran Affairs Canada members provided the lapel pins which veterans sold around the island. These proved to be a very popular item and after selling 800 there were no more available. In general, support from the community was most gratifying. Invitations to attend were sent out to Federal, Provincial and local government politicians, Royal Canadian Mounted Police Divisional HQ and to the Gabriola Elementary School, plus the local Scouts Troop. In April 1995 volunteer veterans commenced to dig the Cairn's foundation. Over the next two weeks the concrete was poured with a maple leaf etched into the surface at each corner. After a week, to allow the concrete to harden, the sandstone was craned into place and anchored to the base. On May 1, 1995, the plaque was professionally inserted into the sandstone. The whole project was then draped with a tarpaulin to keep rain off, and away from prying eyes. The program was sent for printing and the Gabriola Volunteer Fire Department offered to hose down the roadway and paths around the Cairn two days before the ceremony. On May 8, 1995, the Unveiling and Dedication Ceremony was held. The unveiling was performed by Senator Ray Perreault on behalf of the Federal Government, Ms. June Bobbie on behalf of Veterans Affairs Canada, Ted Krell representing service veterans and "All Who Served", and Joe Davis representing Gabriola's pioneers and present day residents. Reverend Donald Gordon, a former RCNVR, performed the dedication and conducted the service that followed. It was estimated that 40 veterans and 400 members of the community, population 3000+, attended. Veterans and the public were welcomed, and dignitaries were introduced by the Carin Committee's Chairperson, Peter Eastick, former RNVR. Eastick stressed the importance of "never forgetting" the sacrifices made by the men and women of our Armed Forces during the First and Second World Wars and the Korean conflict. During the playing of "Reveille" a fly-over was made by a Second World War Harvard (trainer) aircraft flown by Phil Kalnin. The pilot flew several passes over the area, as each time he dipped his wings in salute. Following the ceremony, dignitaries and guests were entertained to a light luncheon at the nearby Agricultural Hall. Major Charles Hoey Victory Cross Memorial Park, British Columbia Constructed in 1921 in memory of all those who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars and Korea. This monument is the venue for services commemorating the "Battle of the Atlantic", the "Burma Campaign", the "Battle of Britain" and Remembrance Day, November 11. The memorial takes the form of a plain cross. Unveiled on Armistice Day in 1921, it was financed by public subscription and maintained by the City of Duncan. Of the 1066 people from the Cowichan River Valley who joined the Armed Forces in World War I, close to 170 people gave their lives during the war or died because of war-related causes. World War II added seventy-plus names to the list. After World War I, the residents of Duncan joined thousands of Canadian communities who built War memorials. Many people mistakenly believe these memorials glorify war and martial values. They were, rather, an attempt to make some sense, on emotional and spiritual levels, of the death of so many friends, loved ones and comrades.

Shortly after the 1918 Armistice, the Ancient Order of Foresters – Court Shawnigan began a subscription to erect a cenotaph that would forever remember the sacrifices made by local young people. In 1920, they built a cenotaph on a small triangular lot in the center of Cobble Hill Village to commemorate those who fought in the First World War. It was designed and erected by the Vancouver firm of Peterson, Chandler and Stephens. On Sunday, February 15, 1920, it was unveiled by Premier John Oliver, standing in for Lieutenant Governor Colonel The Honourable E.C. Prior who was ill with influenza.

The Foresters added a wrought iron fence and gates, and a German artillery piece and machine gun were placed just outside the fence. The machine gun was stolen and the artillery was removed during the Second World War in a drive for scrap iron. Later, inscriptions were added to the cenotaph for the Second World War.

Through consultation with the Malahat and Cobble Hill Branches of the Royal Canadian Legion, the Cowichan Valley Regional District, Veterans Affairs Canada and the Dutch Community, a new Memorial Park was developed from the old site. In August 2009, the renovated cenotaph was rededicated during the celebration of the 100th Cobble Hill Fair. The memorial was moved about 35 feet east of its original location at the intersection of Heigh Street and Fisher Road, and elevated by almost a foot on a concrete foundation surrounded with red and black pavers. New granite plaques were placed over names which had been damaged over the years and two missing names, Private James McClurg and Lieutenant Geoffrey Hook, were added to the list of those killed during the Great War.

When the obelisk was moved a short distance to its new location, it was discovered that the list of donors reported to be under it was an urban legend. During the renovation a time capsule was placed under the structure before attachment to its new base.

On August 1, 2024, a new plaque was unveiled honouring the Korean War, Peacekeeping, Gulf War, Afghanistan, and in service to Canada. This addition was made possible through the efforts of Malahat Legion and CVRD Area C director Mike Wilson, who together with several generous donors raised nearly $8,000 to refurbish the cenotaph and install the plaque. 

To this day, this site is used as a gathering place on Remembrance Day and has historical and cultural significance to the community.

Constructed in July 1920 in memory of those who gave their lives in the First and Second World Wars. Their names are inscribed on the Cenotaph. Pre 1914, 1,500 citizens enlisted for the war voluntarily from the Cowichan District, at that time the population stood between 6,500 and 7,000 residents. After a meeting with some of the council members a request was made by a Mr. Jarrnett requesting a site for a War Memorial in Chemainus. The request was finally granted by a council on July 28, 1920. This was the beginning of a memorial honouring those comrades who paid the supreme sacrifice in the First World War. The Memorial was erected on 616 square feet of land that was donated by the Council. The intersection of Mill Road and Albert Street with the English church on one corner and the court house and jail on the other became the site for the monument. Requests were made to the council on two occasions to have them consider the donation of two machine guns that would be placed at the memorial. The first request was made by an Alfred Stubbs on June 15, 1921. The second by a Reverend R.D. Porter who at the time held the position of honourable Secretary, Chemainus Committee of the Duncan B.C. Board of Trade. His request was made a few days later on June 21, as he felt that Chemainus should be entitled to some of its War trophies. A Naval gun was donated instead which was placed at the Memorial. No record could be found of what became of the two machine guns in later years. Consequently, as years went by, streets were being changed and the Memorial became part of those changes and had to be moved. Comrade D. Greenhorn, one of the Legion members, was commissioned to do the stonework for its new base. In August 1950 after a few minor delays it was finally moved to its present location on Willow Street across from the United Church. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch #191 took over the care of the grounds after the Community Committee failed to live up to their promise of maintaining the grounds. Dedication Ceremonies were held in September 1950. Names of Second World War casualties were added along with a plaque honouring the Korean Veterans. The Legion Branch President during 1950 was F. Bonde. The Cenotaph Committee consisted of Comrades W. Rice, Deeble and Olson. Each Remembrance Day on November 11th, the Comrades of Branch 191 have a service to honour those who paid the supreme sacrifice and so that their names would never be forgotten.

Erected by Royal Canadian Legion, Branch No. 210 in the fall of 1960, this memorial is dedicated to the war dead of the First and Second World Wars and the Korean War, and to peacekeepers worldwide. The stones were brought from surrounding hills and were lovingly cut and placed by Art Skoda, who stated there would always be a little part of him in Lake Cowichan. Mr. Skoda died the following Remembrance Day in the Interior. Nels LaForge and a large group of volunteers worked on the project. Geoff Dalman was president of the Legion at that time. The memorial was designed by Alan Harder, and financial help was received from local companies and individuals. The memorial was built in the triangular island that sits at the junction of North Shore and South Shore Roads. It was moved to its present location in Central Park in June 1975, because it posed a hazard to motorists. The Legion supported the move as the Annual Remembrance Day service would be uninterrupted at the new location. Colourful Remembrance Day services are held annually at the memorial.

This memorial is dedicated to the local veterans who served in the Navy, Army, Air Force, Women's Services and Merchant Navy. It was erected by Lions Club of Ladysmith.

On November 11, 2014, Temple Lodge, No.33 placed a First World  War Roll of Honour at the entrance to the Duncan Masonic Temple to commemorate the members of Temple Lodge, No. 33 who served in Canada’s military during the First World War. This sign was unveiled by W. Bro. Mark Anderson (W.M. – 2013-15), the local Member of Parliament, Jean Crowder, the local M.L.A., Bill Routley and the Mayor of Duncan, Phil Kent.

In November of 1995 plans made by Georgia Keddy to purchase three Veterans memorials were approved. This was the first time in the North Central Vancouver Island Zone, which contains 10 Royal Canadian Legion branches, that such a venture had been attempted.

The memorials are located in Parksville at St. Anne's Church, Knox United Church, and Yates Memorial. The memorials were constructed in June of 1996 in memory of the Parksville and area Veterans who survived the wars and died in later years. The dedication ceremony took place on October 27, 1996. There was a colour guard, laying of wreaths, unveiling, and a light lunch served by the Ladies Auxiliary to Branch 49.

During 1946 and 1947, a Memorial Committee headed by E.D. Thwaites, raised funds to erect a cenotaph and a traditional stone design cenotaph was dedicated in May of 1949. The Royal Canadian Legion Branch 76 contributed to the fund.

Prior to the cenotaph being built, a wreath was placed at the foot of the Qualicum Beach War Memorial flagstaff, in remembrance of several Veterans interred in the cemetery. 

By 1973, work had started on a new Legion Branch Clubhouse in the Royal Canadian Legion Community Park and it was decided that a new cenotaph should be located there.
