Parental care, like we're talking about the animal world, where discipline is rampant, it is there. If you don't follow a given path, you're exterminated, you're put out of the way, out of existence, they do this. The animals do it. A bear with three cubs, two of them they sedate, they do what mother says, but one is all over the place and he is always getting caught. Yes I've seen this with my own eyes and unless he comes back to his mother, and whatever he's saying to the mother but the mother will sit there and look at it, and then finally reach over with her paw and pull the bear in, that little cub and the little cub will be whining away, whining and finally mother would say, okay then go. And the little cub went off to one side and sat down for a while. You could actually see him trying to think something up, trying to put things together and when he found that it was a waste of time, away he goes again. But our children, the way we're bringing our children up today, what is going to happen to those children, only God knows. Because if the animal will, will, will, will chastise someone in his, in the family for doing something wrong, then they're, they're making a mistake because of the fact that they're in an environment where either you do or you don't and if you don't, you don't exist any longer.

Richard Allen Parker

Richard Allen Parker was born in Vernon, BC on May 27, 1917 to a First Nations family. He talks about his early years, the prejudice that he faced, and the meaning of being First Nations. He left home at an early age to work in the mines. He talks about joining the PPCLI in 1942, fighting the SS and Hitler Youth and his time in Algiers and Italy.
