The First World War October 1917
For almost three desperate months
Allied forces try to break the enemy line
near the town of Passchendaele, Belgium
Then the 100,000-strong Canadian Corps takes over
Our brave soldiers go into battle
After more than two weeks of horrific fighting
in a nightmare of mud and heavy enemy fire
the Canadians capture their objective
The battle is won
but the cost is tragic
Almost 16,000 Canadians are killed or wounded
Nine of our soldiers earn the highest award for bravery
The Victoria Cross
Canada’s soldiers
would play a leading role
in winning the war
