Son of Antoine Bouvrette (deceased in 1895) and Angélique Filion (deceased in 1889). Husband of Bernadette Laframboise, of Montréal, Québec. Ernest was married since 1902 and was father of Laurentia, Marguerite and Fernande Bouvrette.
Enlisted on 6 July 1915 with the 57th Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, regimental number 417646, he was first transferred on 29 October 1915 to the 41st Battalion with regimental number 416682, then to England on 28 June 1916 with the 22nd Battalion. He arrived in France the same day and was killed in action on 15 September during the Battle of Courcelette, Somme, France.

Courcelette is a village some 10 kilometres north-east of the town of Albert, just off the D929 road to Bapaume. The Courcelette British Cemetery is approximately 1 kilometre west of the village on the south side of a track, suitable for cars, from the secondary road from Courcelette to Pozieres. The route is signposted in the village.
