Location:

This cemetery lies on the west side of the main road from Caen to Falaise (route N158) and just north of the village of Cintheaux. Bretteville-sur-Laize is a village and commune in the department of the Calvados, some 16 kilometres south of Caen. The village of Bretteville lies 3 kilometres south-west of the Cemetery. Buried here are those who died during the later stages of the battle of Normandy, the capture of Caen and the thrust southwards (led initially by the 4th Canadian and 1st Polish Armoured Divisions), to close the Falaise Gap, and thus seal off the German divisions fighting desperately to escape being trapped west of the Seine. Almost every unit of Canadian 2nd Corps is represented in the Cemetery. There are about 3,000 allied forces casualties of the Second World War commemorated in this site.

  • Photo of Robert James (Bertie) Ferguson– He was born on May 1, 1922 in Donemana, N Ireland where his father was the creamery manager. His parents emigrated to Canada In 1928 when he was 6. The oldest of 4 boys & 2 girls, 2 of his brothers, Bill & Vic also served during WW11. Educated at Bruce Public School & Roden Commercial School he was employed with the Dunlop Rubber Company prior to enlistment & went overseas in September 1942. After 2 years training in England he spent his final leave visiting his aunt & 2 uncles who were still residing in the old homestead in Killycurragh, Cookstown, Co Tyrone, N Ireland. Another uncle William lived in Philadelphia, USA, Henry (Harry) lived in Dunmore, Cookstown & a fifth, my father, Samuel Gordon, was working in Killyman Creamery, Dungannon, Co Tyrone. Bertie was a member of the United Church of Canada & of Cameron L.O.L. No 613 of Toronto. He was predeceased by his father, also Robert, in 1937 &his aunt Mary in 1910.
