Left Regina in 1936 to play hockey in England. Enlisted in the RAF on May 1, 1936. Was appointed an Officer on May 3, 1937. He was the pilot of an Armstrong Whitworth Whitley bomber K8957, which crashed April 8, 1940, at Northcote Railway station, near Stratford on Avon. The weather was bad, and the aircraft iced up. Mickey ordered all to bail out while he would attempt to land the aircraft. Only one did - from 250 feet, and survived. Three other crewmembers were killed. Two memorial trophies, one for hockey and one for tennis were named in his honour. Also a street and a lake in mid-eastern Saskatchewan are named after him.
