Son of Robert Black (deceased in 1916) and Mary-Ann Mearn (deceased in 1918), of Montréal, Québec. His mother’s name was incorrectly spelled as « Marie-Anne Morins » in his military file and he was enrolled under his nickname « Bob » but his real first name was Robert. He was illiterate and was unable to check the inscription in his files. However, he was later correctly inscribed in the Bok of Remembrance. He was deployed to France on 29 March 1918 to serve with the 22nd Battalion, but he never joined this unit. He was rather transferred a few days later to the 14th Battalion. He was killed the first day of the Battle of Amiens, between Gentelles and Cayeux-en-Santerre, two villages located East of Amiens.
