Mentioned in despatches, "in recognition of gallant and distinguished services in the combined attack on Dieppe." Croix de guerre avec palme de bronze (France) 'Captain Hertzberg rendered valuable services in the preliminary training and organization of the troops under his command, up to and including the actual embarkation for the attack on Dieppe, 19 August 1942. He embarked with one of the larger groups of his unit, and during several hours of intermittent bombing and artillery fire remained in an exposed position on the deck of his craft to supervise the anti-aircraft machine guns under his command. Throughout the entire operation, Captain Hertzberg, by his bearing and conduct, set a fine example to the men.'
