Son of Walter Gunning Campbell and Mary Millicent Walsh, of London. Great nephew of General Sir Frederick Campbell (1860-1943) KCB, DSO of Argyll, Scotland; nephew of Captain Levison Granville Byron Alexander Campbell (1881-1951) DSO, Royal Navy, and of Major Charles Hay Campbell, British Army in India. His brother, private Michael Campbell, served in Iceland with the Canadian Army during the Second World War.
