Son of John Robert Bramleyand Margaret Young; Husband of Elizabeth Balls, de South Shields, Co. Durham. Father of Kenneth Bramley. In the First World War, John Robert enlisted on November 9, 1914, in the Tyne E. Territorial Force Engineer, regimental number 12413. After the war he became a ship's captain.
In the First World War he enlisted at the Prince of Wales's (West Yorkshire), number 9219, in the Army Reserve and fought in the war.
On June 18, 1944, the Albert C. Field, a member of convoy EBC-14, was heading for the Normandy landing beaches when she was hit by a torpedo from a German Ju-88 aircraft at 11:40 p.m. south of Bournemouth, England. In less than three minutes, the ship broke in two and exploded. Out of a total of 35 men, including ten soldiers and sailors in charge of the ship's defense, the captain and three sailors lost their lives.

THE TOWER HILL MEMORIAL stands on the South side of the garden of Trinity Square, a hundred yards East of Mark Lane Station, and just within the boundaries of the Metropolitan Borough of Stepney and the Liberty of the Tower. It is at the hub of maritime England. Behind it are Trinity House and the offices of the Port of London Authority, and the Thames stretches before it; the wide space of Great Tower Hill, leading down from it to the river, is the traditional forum of merchant seamen and their fellow workers. Lloyd's is on the North, the Custom House and Billingsgate Market are near it on the West, and beyond the Tower, Eastwards, is the long line of the Docks the greatest dock system in the world.
