Hendecourt-les-Cagnicourt is in the Department of the Pas-de-Calais, 16 kilometres south-east of Arras and 4 kilometres south of the Arras-Cambrai main road. DOMINION CEMETERY is 2.5 kilometres north-east of the village, about 545 metres from the road.

McLean volunteered to serve early in the war and signed his military attestation on September 22nd, 1914 at Valcartier Camp, Quebec. He was a member of the historic First Canadian Contingent.
