Grave marker – Walter was born on 1 Oct 1871 in Readsburg, Wisconsin. He was single and living in Regina, where he worked as a barber in 1915. He enlisted in the 68th Battalion in Moose Jaw on 29 November, 1915. At that time he was 44 years old. Walter was 5'8 1/2' tall. He had blue eyes and gray hair. He noted his next of kin as his sister in Wisconsin. He claimed no prior military service. Walter was discharged from the 68th Battalion on 22 February, 1916. Walter went to Winnipeg and enlisted in the 200th Battalion in April 1916. He lied about his birth, claiming a birthday of 1 Oct 1872 in Aberdeen, Scotland. He also lied about having had 3 years service in the US Coast Artillery in Florida. He noted his next of kin as his mother in Wisconsin. He went to Camp Hughes with the 200th Battalion, where he died on 22 July, 1916, aged 44. The 68th Bn was shipped to England in 1916 and disbanded at Bramshott. Its personnel were absorbed by the 15th Reserve Bn (Saskatchewan Regiment), 6th Reserve Brigade at that camp. It is perpetuated by the Royal Regina Rifles and was awarded the battle honour 'The Great War, 1916'. The 200th Bn was shipped to England in 1917 and disbanded at Shorncliffe. Its personnel were absorbed by the 11th Reserve Bn (Manitoba Regiment), 2nd Reserve Brigade at that camp. The Bn was awarded the battle honour 'The Great War 1917'. It is not perpetuated.
