Location:

DICKEBUSCH NEW MILITARY CEMETERY is located 5 Km south west of Ieper town centre, in the village of Dikkebus itself. ( * Dikkebus is the modern spelling of Dickebusch). From Ieper town centre the Dikkebusseweg (N375), is reached via Elverdingsestraat, straight over a roundabout onto J. Capronstraat (for 30 metres), then left along M. Fochlaan. Immediately after the train station, the first right hand turning is the Dikkebusseweg. On reaching the village of Dikkebus, the DICKEBUSH NEW MILITARY CEMETERY is located on the Kerkstraat, which is a small street turning left off the Dikkebusseweg. 200 metres along this street, and just beyond the village church lies the cemetery. This cemetery lies opposite Dickebusch New Military Extension.

  • Photo of Ian Robert MacNaughton– 903 Lt. Ian Robert Reekie MacNaughton (RMC 1911-1914) was born at Westmount, Quebec July 17th, 1893. When he studied at RMC in 1912-13 he was captain of the hockey and tennis team, played on the gym squad and won several trophies for paddling. He enjoyed debating and golf. He was the literary editor of the Stone Frigate. He studied at MCGill Arts 1909-11 and Law 1914-15. He enlisted with the Canadian Overseas Expeditionary Force in 1914. He served with the Canadian Infantry (Quebec Regiment) 24th Batallion. He served in France. He was killed in action on Apr 26, 1916 and was buried in Dickebusch New Military Cemetery 5 Km south west of Ieper town centre, Belgium grave reference: J. 12. He is on a list of alumni in Memoriam 1914-1918 compiled for the McGill University's Memorial Service on October 6, 1946 marking the laying of the cornerstone of Memorial Hall. He was commemorated on Page 130 of the First World War Book of Remembrance.

  • Stained Glass Window– On their 50th anniversary, the class of 1915 at the Royal Military College of Canada have placed this memorial stained glass window to honour their fallen comrades.
  • Plaque– Ex-cadets are named on the Memorial Arch at the Royal Military College of Canada in Kingston, Ontario and in memorial stained glass windows to fallen comrades.

He was buried in the Dickebusch New Military Cemetery in Belgium. There are two stained glass widows on the North side of the Kenmore Kirch Church of Scotland in Highland Perthshire. In the transept there is a window dedicated to the memory of John MacNaughton LLD and his son, Ian Robert Reekie MacNaughton, designed by Abbey Studios.
