Son of Ephrem Chalut and Vitaline Maheu (deceased in 1901). His father remarried to Ernestine Corbeil in 1908, lived in Montréal where he died in 1917. Joseph stated being born on 28 September 1888 when he enlisted.
Severely wounded on 3 May 1918 nearby Neuville-Vitasse, Joseph was evacuated to No 57 Casualty clearing station in Aubigny, where he died of his wounds the next day.

Aubigny Communal Cemetery is south of the village of Aubigny-en-Artois and the Cemetery Extension is behind it. The village of Aubigny-en-Artois is approximately 15 kilometres north-west of Arras on the road to St. Pol. After turning into the village from the N.39 on the D.75, the Cemetery lies south on a road leading from the centre of the village.
