Photo of Edwin Gard – Edwin Gard (furthest to the right, back row) was Killed in Action on February 19,1917. On the morning of February 19th the 47th Battalion "put on a show." which unfortunately drew heavy retaliation from the Germans in the form of mortars and shrapnel shells causing the 46th Battalion to suffer several casualties. Among these casualties were Edwin Gard and his brother Walter who was by his side at the time of the action. Edwin was killed instantly and Walter suffered the loss of one of his legs. This particular action took place in the Sector on Chateau-de-la-Haie, on the road from Gouy-Ervins to Villers-au-Bois, 4 to 5 kilometers west of Vimy Ridge where Canadians would make themselves famous two months later. Medals – British War Medal and Victory Medal to Pte Edwin Gard - Killed In Action on 19 Feb 1917. The 46th Can Inf Bn had conducted a very successful trench raid on that date, however they suffered two dead in the effort or in the retaliatory shelling which followed. Edwin Gard was one of those killed.
