On the morning of February 19th the 47th Battalion "put on a show." which unfortunately drew heavy retaliation from the Germans in the form of mortars and shrapnel shells causing the 46th Battalion to suffer several casualties. Among these casualties were Edwin Gard and his brother Walter who was by his side at the time of the action. Edwin was killed instantly and Walter suffered the loss of one of his legs. This particular action took place in the Sector on Chateau-de-la-Haie, on the road from Gouy-Ervins to Villers-au-Bois, 4 to 5 kilometers west of Vimy Ridge where Canadians would make themselves famous two months later.
