Location:

Turn off the N4 toward Belfast, go under the railroad bridge, turn left at fork (Spitskop Road), turn right at Van Kraayenberg Street, and then left at Scheepers Street. The road goes from tar to bad dirt road. Continue on Scheepers Street for 150 m. The Belfast Old Municipal Cemetery is on the left and the Canadian graves are at the top-centre.

  • Plaque– Captain Thomas Wellington Chalmers was an alumni of the Royal Military College of Canada #99 1883. He served with the Canadian Mounted Rifles in Belfast, South Africa. He died on Nov 2, 1900 in Belfast, South Africa. His name is listed on the Memorial Arch at the Royal Military College of Canada.

  • Photo of Thomas Chalmers– As you enter the Mackenzie building at the Royal Military College of Canada you immediately see a stair case which was designated the memorial stairway after the First World War by 151 Sir Archibald Cameron Macdonell, RMC Commandant 1919-25. The staircase is decorated with the photographs of all those ex-cadets who had died on military service: 99 Captain Thomas Wellington Chalmers, Canadian Mounted Rifles was an ex-cadet who had died of wounds or was killed in action in South Africa in 1900.

9265 Ross McKenzie (RMC 1973), the RMC museum curator said ``It's a memorial to all of the ex-cadets of RMC and now all of the other military colleges who have died in the service of Canada. It symbolizes the college's motto, truth, duty, valour, it shows the high cost of war and shows what the college was meant to do, to produce officers to serve Canada when they were needed.``
