Son of Thomas Alexander Marshall and Mary Elizabeth Webb Baker of Gouverneur, New York.
He served with the 48th Highlanders - NPAM - then with the Canadian Tank Corps. He became an American citizen and was drafted into the US Army on 17 January 1945, service number N-440-A. He enlisted in the Canadian Merchant Navy.
On 12 April 1945, the SS Silver Star Park collided with the American freighter Mamgore and caught fire off the coast of New York, USA, in the North Atlantic. At least 15 sailors, including the captain, were killed in the accident.
