One Big Family
Heroes Remember
Transcript
Oh I think they’re very brave men
and all that, a lot of them we
picked up in Toronto and
they had no training at all,
not a bit of training,
I don’t think they knew what a rifle was,
but they were all brave.
I never seen a coward in the bunch.
They were very, very brave soldiers as far as
I’m concerned and from that day to
this day we’re proud outfit and
we have a good association
that’s always fighting for us,
the Hong Kong Association.
Interviewer: Is there a strong bond between you men?
Oh God yes , when one of our guys happens
to pass away or something like that,
we all try to get to where he is and pay
our respects and all that and
I’ve been through a lot of them.
Oh no, I’ll never forget it, never.
The way I put it, I always say,
I even say to some of the boys,
if there is such a thing as a heaven and
we all end up there I said I hope to hell that
we all meet up there,
the whole regiment because
I thought the world of them, you know.
We were one big family.
Description
Mr. Lecouffe has high esteem for his fellow soldiers, especially those raw untrained recruits from the inner cities, as well as for his association. He regards them all as family.
Lionel Lecouffe
Lionel Lecouffe was born in Campbellton, New Brunswick on March 23, 1922. His father was a First World War veteran and his mother a war bride. Mr. Lecouffe worked on the road for food vouchers before becoming a deliveryman to Easton Bakery at $2 a day. Only seventeen and already a member of the Campbellton militia, he lied about his age to enlist with the Royal Rifles at Matapedia. Ironically, after his release from a Hong Kong hospitalization, Mr. Lecouffe found himself attached to the Winnipeg Grenadiers with whom he finished the war.
