Experimental Surgery

Dr. McIndoe and Dr. Tilley were blessed with a gift. They started doing this experimental surgery as they called it, new hands, new faces, a pedicle from here to here. It was just something so different that one couldn’t comprehend. These young men, in the disfigurements that they had and yet talk about atmosphere in there. You couldn’t feel sorry for them, you know what I mean. In your heart, but you wouldn’t dare be sorry for them. I mean they were so up. Mischievous too!!! And in fact my name was “Bea Round” and when I came they used to sing, “I’ll be a round!” you know, and I’d run down the ward and lose a slipper and the next thing somebody’s throwing my slipper down the end of the ward and then somebody’s throwing it back. So, they were enjoying themselves, you know, teasing us!
