A Better Person

Heroes Remember

Transcript
It makes a better person out of you. You learn to respect people, you learn to take orders, you . . . I have a son that joined the Forces and he's changed the way that I changed. Because I was spoiled. And I learned so much from being in the army. It was the three best years of my life. And I would recommend it to any young people. I don't know if it's changed much today, my son said, he's been in for over 30 years, and he said "It's not the same mom as it was when I joined. It's different." But I would recommend to any young person. I grew up as the only girl, I was spoiled. When I joined there I wasn't spoiled, I had to fend for myself, and . . . Interviewer: Was that difficult? Pardon me? Interviewer: Was that difficult? It was, it was. And I wasn't . . . when I needed something I had to work for it. When I . . . before I joined, it made me a better person to go out into the world. Much better.
Description

Ms. MacNeil says that her time in the army was the three best years of her life. She explains why she feels it makes you a better person.

Kathleen MacNeil

Ms. Kathleen MacNeil was born on the 4th of August 1923, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Her father, a Veteran of the First World War, worked as a harness maker and delivered the mail. The family home was in Loyalist and she walked the 1.5 miles daily to attend a one room school house, grades 1-9, in Springvale. Ms. MacNeil and a couple of friends completed a course in Charlottetown where there weren't any job prospects so they decided to join the Canadian Army. Ms. MacNeil was stationed in Halifax, Nova Scotia, for the duration of her service in the Armed Forces serving with MD6 Head Quarters on Spring Garden Road. While in Halifax she met her future husband who was a member of the Royal Canadian Navy. They married in 1944. After the war Ms. MacNeil stayed in Halifax until 1946. After her discharge Ms. MacNeil moved with her husband to his hometown of Dalhousie, New Brunswick, where she had four children and immediately went into service with the Royal Canadian Legion, a service that would later see her receive a medal of commendation from the Minister of Veterans Affairs for service with the legion.
