I think we won the Cold War. I think the dedication of putting so many North American Forces – Brits or Canadians and Americans – into Europe and maintaining them there for so many years had a great ... I know that the Germans were very impressed that we would keep even a brigade there so long after the end of the Second World War. And they really were worried about the other side coming across the border. They really were worried about the capability of the other side to roll over them. And in fact the German general commanding Fuhrer-Panzer-Grenadier-Division said to me one day when I said to him, “Well we’re pretty small peanuts sir, you know. It’s just a brigade of Canadian soldiers.” He said, “It means more than a brigade Tom. You have to understand that your brigade is an example and they’re here with us and it means a lot more to us.”
