Doing His Part

There was a war on, that’s the only reason why I wanted to sign up because I wanted to do my part too. At my seventh attempt, I was accepted for the Navy, Royal Navy.Interviewer: Seven attempts? !Seven attempts, yes. They wanted me to go to Canada to join the Canadian Navy and I was only making $3.50 a week. A whole week, $3.50, surely that wouldn’t get me out of St. John’s, let alone to Halifax, that’s where I’d have to go to join up.
