Being a Cook

When I joined up they asked me what I wanted to be and since I was just on general duties I said, “General duties and cook second choice.” She said, “No way, cook first choice, general duties if you don’t pass.” That’s how it went. I got a lot of help from civilian bakers. I did the baking for fifteen hundred men, big pies, big sheets. Then I learned how to do the butchering and make sausages. I made a great big barrel full of sausages. Later in the afternoon, cut them and then cook them and then serve them all in one day.
