Description
Mr. Barr recalls the speech of Montgomery and his persistent and winning attitude.
Transcription
He asked to speak to all the artillery and attached signals in the 3rd Division. And we met him at a place called Bewley Airport in Hampshire and he climbed up on the hood of his car. He said, “I have never in all my years in the army seen so many gunners in one place at one time,” and he said, “that is good because we are going to have a big gun fight!” And he said, “Don’t tell this to the infantry but the artillery win my battles.” And he said, “I am as tired of this war as I know you are but we are going to see this thing through together and we are going over and knock the Germans for six right out of France.” And that’s the first indication we had that France would be the actual target of this fight, you know.
