On 30 July 1942, the liner Robert E. Lee left Trinidad with 270 passengers bound for Tampa, Florida. After leaving convoy TAW-7, she was escorted by the American submarine hunter USS PC-566. At 10:37 pm, she was torpedoed by the U-166. The ship sank about fifteen minutes after impact, in position 28°37'N/88°30'W. After hunting down and sinking the submarine, the American ship picked up the shipwrecked crew, assisted by the USS SC-19 and the tug Underwriter. Of the 407 crew and passengers, 15 passengers and 10 sailors lost their lives. Among the survivors were 39 men from the Andrea Brovig, 32 from the Hoegh Giant and 44 from the Stanvac Palembang. A sailor from the Stanvac Palembang perished with the Robert E. Lee.
