Cette cloche appartient au NCSM Griffon. Comme l’explique la plaque, le NCSM Ottawa avait brièvement été nommé NSM Griffin durant la Deuxième Guerre mondiale. Malgré l’épellation différente, c’est la raison pour laquelle la cloche du NCSM Griffon est celle du NSM Griffin. Le nom des enfants qui ont été baptisés à bord du navire y sont gravés.

DESTROYERS & FRIGATES FOR AIRCRAFT DEFENCE,
IT WAS A LETHAL WEAPON WITH MUZZLE VELOCITY
OF 2650 FEET PER SECOND AND RANGE UP TO
19,400 Yards (11 MILES). SHELLS WEIGHED 63 LBS.

UPKEEP OF THIS GUN PROVIDED BY THE THUNDER
BAY NAVAL HERITAGE FUND AND HMCS GRIFFON.

THE WHITE ENSIGN DISPLAYED AT THE REAR OF THE
DISPLAY CASE IS THE ENSIGN WORN BY THE HMCS PORT
ARTHUR ON THE AFTERNOON OF 19 JANUARY, 1943 WHEN
THE SHIP ATTACKED AND SUNK THE ITALIAN SUB-
MARINE “TRITONE”.

PORT ARTHUR WAS ENGAGED IN ESCORT DUTIES IN
THE MEDITERRANEAN OFF THE PORT OF BOUGIE WHEN
AT 1400 THE “TRITONE” WAS DETECTED, AND THE
ATTACK WAS SOON SUCCESSFUL. THE “TRITONE” WAS
A NEW SUBMARINE ON ITS FIRST WAR PATROL ONLY A
FEW HOURS OUT OF HOME PORT WHEN IT FELL VICTIM TO
PORT ARTHUR.

THE ENSIGN HAS BEEN PRESENTED TO HMCS GRIFFON
FOR DISPLAY HERE BY J. DOUGLAS RITCHIE. RITCHIE
WAS THEN A SUB-LIEUTENANT RCNVR AND COMMUNICA-
TIONS OFFICER ABOARD PORT ARTHUR. THE ENSIGN
WAS TAKEN DOWN SHORTLY AFTER THE ACTION AND
PRESERVED UNTIL PRESENTED TO GRIFFON.

THE ENSIGN IS TO BE MADE AVAILABLE FOR DISPLAY
AT ANY FUTURE REUNION OF THE CREW OF HMCS PORT
ARTHUR. A PICTURE OF SLT RITCHIE IS DISPLAYED IN
THE CASE.
