By standing up for what was right, Michelle Douglas helped pave the way for 2SLGBTQI+ rights in Canada's military.

Frederick was sentenced to hard labour in 1916 for charges relating to sexuality. He died in battle in 1917.

Ross served in two wars and was famous as a wartime entertainer. Military authorities dismissed him from service because of his sexuality.

At 17, Kareth Huber felt she was exactly where she was supposed to be as a Canadian Armed Forces Private. But her pride turned to shame in 1976 when she became a victim of Canada's LGBTQ purge.

After her dismissal from the CAF at age 19, Purge Survivor and class action lawsuit lead Martine has spent her career as an advocate for Canada’s 2SLGBTQI+ community.

Expelled from the Royal Canadian Navy in the LGBT purge, Todd Ross turned his considerable talents to build an impressive public service career, and helped lead the drive for redress from the federal government.

Filmmaker Sarah Fodey’s documentary – The Fruit Machine – details personal accounts of former public servants affected by the LGBT purge.

On 28 November 2017, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau delivered a formal apology to 2SLGBTQI+ federal public servants, Canadian Armed Forces and RCMP members harmed by legislation, policies and practices that led to their oppression and discrimination.

The monument will be a visible landmark that will recognize generations of 2SLGBTQI+ people in Canada and tell the story of those who have been persecuted, abused, dismissed and marginalized because of who they desire and how they identify.
