Mr. Volterman is a Veteran of the Dieppe Raid who has been cited for assisting Veterans and Veterans' widows in applying for government benefits to which they are entitled. For more than 20 years, Mr. Volterman has served on the Board of Directors of The Royal Hamilton Light Infantry (RHLI), faithfully making arrangements for surviving RHLI officers' annual get togethers. Mr. Volterman has contributed in an exemplary manner to the commemoration of Canadian Veterans' sacrifice and achievements. He has designed commemorative plaques in honour of Hamiltonian Veterans' outstanding contributions to Canada's war effort, both in France and in Holland. A similar commemorative plaque was also placed at Gore Park in Hamilton. The RHLI raised $25,000 towards the cost of this project, and remaining funds were given to France and Holland for flowers to be laid at the plaques' respective sites. Mr. Volterman assisted the Government of France with a special program to recognize Canadian Veterans who fought in the Dieppe Raid, by contacting all those Veterans who were entitled to receive a Certificate of Recognition. Mr. Volterman also wrote a book entitled Our Glorious Dead, which contains the burial sites and memorials of 560 members of the RHLI. Proceeds from the sales are donated to the John Weir Foote Museum where he has been a long-standing member of the museum committee. In fact, Mr. Volterman helped to design and build the structure which honours the military history of the RHLI.
