James Shields (1921-2010)

A Second World War Veteran who served with the Navy, Mr. Shields has been deeply committed to Navy, Naval Association and Veteran causes for over 45 years. In 1969, Mr. Shields helped establish the “Naval Association Eastern Division”, serving as President since its establishment to the present day. He also coordinates a Colour Party for funerals of deceased Naval Veterans.

In 2001, Mr. Shields assisted HMCS Cabot, the Naval Reserve in St. John’s, in naming the Chief and Petty Officer's Mess after the Naval Ship Avenger which was sunk during the Second World War, claiming the lives of many Newfoundlanders. Along with the HMCS Cabot, Mr. Shields organizes the annual church service, parade and wreath laying ceremonies for the Battle of the Atlantic. He ensures that the Naval Association is a full participant in Remembrance Day and other Veterans’ activities, and he contributes to raising awareness of the war and the Veterans’ achievements.

Mr. Shields has been a member of the Royal Canadian Legion for the past 60 years and he assists with the Poppy fund, special events and other projects. Most recently, Mr. Shields is involved in a project to commemorate the Newfoundland Naval Veterans lost during the Second World War. By virtue of his leadership and his many deeds, Mr. Shields has ensured that the legacy of Canada’s Veterans will be preserved for future generations.
