Alliance, Alberta
During Malcolm Bisset’s rehabilitation from a severe head injury he discovered a wartime photograph of his late uncle, a Veteran of the Dieppe Raid in the Second World War. This photograph inspired research in which he discovered 13 living Veterans from B Squadron, 14th Calgary Tank Regiment. He worked to get his license back and travelled around Alberta, meeting each Veteran and gathering their stories. He then built a mobile museum using a 1948 Curtis Wright trailer, providing an up close and personal look at the Dieppe Raid and life as a prisoner of war, as told by the Veterans he interviewed.
Since meeting the Veterans, he has committed to towing the museum and sharing the Veterans’ stories at various civic events, particularly in the rural Alberta communities where many of B Squadron, 14th Canadian Tank Regiment soldiers were recruited. Through his work with the mobile exhibit, he kept Veterans engaged until their final days and continues to keep their experiences alive for members of the public.
In an effort to stay engaged and current, he has also supported the No Stone Left Alone Foundation, the Veterans Association Food Bank, Wounded Warriors Canada, the War Amps of Canada, the Edmonton Veterans Villa and distributed poppy seeds supplied by Veterans Affairs Canada.
