Kelvington, Saskatchewan
Dale Mennie has done remarkable work to commemorate the service and sacrifice of Veterans in his community of Kelvington, Saskatchewan. He is the son of a Second World War Veteran from the area, a military enthusiast, and a 41-year member of The Royal Canadian Legion, Kelvington Branch.
He has been very active in Legion activities and is always available to help with fundraisers and other projects. He has also participated in many Remembrance Day visits to the local hospital and lodge. For the past three years, he has been the primary organizer for the Legion’s Remembrance Day ceremony.
In 2020, with the Legion, he initiated a project in which Veterans from the local community were honoured with street post banners. The banners contained pictures and names of 71 First World War and Second World War Veterans from Kelvington. They were put on display for six weeks surrounding Remembrance Day and were placed, wherever possible, in a location that had some significance to the Veteran on the banner. He also offered walking tours, taking families of the Veterans to the banners and explaining facts about the Veterans’ lives, and the significance of the banner locations.
Before they were installed, he took several of the banners to Veterans or family members who would be otherwise unable to go to see them. This was very moving for many of them.
