Mr. Ronald MacBurnie

Lower Five Islands, Nova Scotia

Mr. MacBurnie is a Veteran of the Korean War and a retired Peacekeeping Veteran. He has taken it upon himself to ensure crosses with a poppy and a Canadian flag are placed on the graves of fallen and former members of the Canadian Forces. From his small workshop behind his home in the rural district of Lower Five Islands, Nova Scotia, Mr. MacBurnie has laboured many hours and at his own expense, to complete these crosses, which he personally places on the graves in his community. Mr. MacBurnie maintains his local cenotaph and keeps it in pristine condition. When news of a casualty reaches his community, Mr. MacBurnie lowers the flag to half mast for three days and places a cross with a poppy and a Canadian flag at the cenotaph. He is an active member of his local Royal Canadian Legion Branch and proudly wears his Legion uniform as he goes door-to- door collecting donations for the annual Poppy Campaign. At 78 years young, Mr. MacBurnie is a well-respected member of his community.
