Robert Lucien Spénard

Ottawa, Ontario

A Veteran of the Second World War and member of The Royal Canadian Legion since 1949, Mr. Spénard served on the Executive of the Montgomery Branch for many years. In his capacity as Treasurer, Mr. Spénard also served as Chairman of the Building Elevator Fundraising Project, raising $350,000 toward the construction of the Branch's elevator, giving easy access to the buildings floors to all disabled and aging Veterans and their friends. Mr. Spénard has always been available to serve his fellow Veterans and has held several positions in support of the Legion's activities. Over the years, he has been Chairman of the Branch By-laws Committee, Chairman of the Finance Committee, Member of the Entertainment Committee and Production Assistant for the Branch's News Magazine.

In addition to his dedication to the work of the Montgomery Legion Branch, Mr. Spénard's devotion to Veterans and their causes reaches far into the community. He has served both as a member and Vice President of the St. Vincent de Paul Society for 30 years, and was responsible for organizing fund-raisers to receive money, food and lodging to provide much-needed assistance to underprivileged families. Immediately following his honourable discharge from the military, Mr. Spénard took responsibility for the well-being and care of his father-in-law, a severely injured Veteran of the First World War, up and until his passing in 1956. Mr. Spénard was always very dedicated to community welfare, particularly through his efforts on behalf of the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario, and was inducted into the Order of the Good Bear at CHEO in 1999. Mr. Spénard also volunteered his time at the Rideau Veterans Home bingos and spearheaded a presentation of Christmas gifts for all residents.

Mr. Spénard's contribution to Veterans and to the community have been truly outstanding. His consistent devotion to Veterans and fellow citizens has been recognized by several presentations from organizations and the Government of Canada.
